One of the players punched the referee as he had been angered by his judgement in the high school basketball game held in Kyushu last month. The victim’s injury was so severe that the assailant player, who was a foreign exchange student, apologized in tears after the game was over.

The school made him move back to his home country out of his own will.

Under no circumstances should violence be tolerated.

It seems , however, that there was no one around who could speak the boy’s mother tongue, French, which led him to mental collapse.

In the world of student sports, many schools enroll non-Japanese boys and girls who are expected to do an outstanding job and contribute to their sports clubs.

Is there any possibility that those schools have treated such young athletes merely as a tool to win sports games?

Is enough support given to them making efforts despite suffering from language and cultural barriers ?
