この春中学校に入ったばかりの生徒たちが、新しい教科書を持ってやって来た。

去年まではワンワールドだったが今年からニューホライズンに。表紙デザインの鮮やかなこと。

中をペラペラめくって驚く、なんとQRコードが各所に！

タブレットやスマホ持ってる人は、いつでもどこでも無料で教科書本文の音声が聴けるわけだ。もうCDを買わなくてもいい、時代は変わったなぁ。

さらにページをめくると歌のコーナー。相変わらずカーペンターズとビートルズだ。ここだけは昔と変わっていない。

「この歌知ってる。今でも歌えるぞ」と言うと、「へぇどんな歌？　歌ってみて」

リクエストにお答えして歌ってみた。

Sing sing a song sing out strong sing out loud.

急にあの頃が頭をよぎる。1973年、イガグリ頭の中学生だった。まさか48年後に中学生相手にこの歌を歌うとは思ってもみなかった。笑笑

あの頃は札幌オリンピックがあったりして日本中が盛り上がっていた。そして今は…いや何も言うまい。つらく苦しいのは自分だけじゃなく世界中の人々も同じ。

ならばせめて心休まる歌でも歌って世界中に平和が戻ることを祈りたい。

受験シーズンが終わりました。

残念ながら第一志望に合格できなかった生徒たちがいます。

悔しいでしょう。やるせない気持ちでいっぱいでしょう。僕もむかし同じ立場を経験しているのでよくわかるつもりです。

A blessing in disguise と言うフレーズが英語にあります。

不幸や災難は、幸福が姿を変えているだけなんだよと言う意味です。

つらい出来事も長い目で見ればプラスに転じます。第一志望校に行けなかった皆さん、どうか肩を落とさないでください。前を向いていきましょう。

チャット友達のArvinクンと久しぶりにおしゃべりしました。話題は昨日の北海道新聞に出ていたワクチンパスポートについて。

Yeah vaccine passport. They’re now thinking of introducing the vaccine passport. So any person who is traveling abroad will be supposed to bring the passport which carries the certificate of whether or not he has been  vaccinated or not, and so that will be really  helpful in eliminating formality of taking long time to check and confirming safety of the people trying to immigrate.

 Actually, when I went to Indonesia, I met a German lady. That German lady. I think her passport has an attachment to it. Along with that passport,  there is also another document attached to it and it shows her the vaccines that she took. Uh, you know, before traveling. So this is to prevent her from bringing virus back to Germany. You know, if she comes home. In that case I think, this is not really a new thing to some countries. This is new to many countries, more than before, but in Japan. Have you done this before?

Anyway, I think that yes it is useful at the same time you know it’s a little bit sad, because if you want to travel. And you will be deprived of  your right not to,  or you will be deprived of your right not to be vaccinated. Yeah, yeah, it’s like you are forced to have a vaccine. So you cannot travel without the vaccine, so it’s unfair in a sense that you lose your freedom if you don’t get injected, right?

当塾のメンバーは、LINEグループアカウントを作って自由にチャットしています。昨日旭川でサプライズの花火大会があったことを目撃したメンバーが投稿してます。

そのうちいくつか抜粋して紹介します。多少文法ミスが散見されますがご勘弁願います。笑笑

Did you see the fireworks last Friday? We could see it from my room. It was great! I had good time. The night sky was so beautiful with fireworks. I wonder , who did this present give us ? Do you know ?

I watched it while I was at ＣＯＣＯＤＥ.

I wondered what event was being held.

Wow wonderful！ I haven’t known completely about fireworks．Winter’s fireworks are rare．

英語は90点以上取れるけど他の科目がダメ。

そんなため息が数人の中学生から聞こえてきました。

数学は難しい。

社会や理科は覚えることがたくさん。

国語は日本語だから何とかなると思っていても60点がやっと。

ふーむ、これはなんとかしなきゃなぁ。英語だけ教えて満足していてはダメなんだ。他の4教科も良い点を取れるようにサポートしなきゃ。

と言うわけで英語専門塾を脱皮し5教科すべて指導してみることにします。

追加料金は一切いただきません。英語のみで結構。1年後何らかの実績が数字として現れたら、改めて料金を決めたいと思います。

自分は本当に涙もろいです。

I find myself easily moved to tears.

先日高校2年生のtomoくんと授業をしていて、

The other day I was giving a lesson to Tomo, a high school sophomore.

彼の教科書に出ている感動的な話に目が止まり、2人で読むことにしました。His school textbook had this touching story so we read it together.

それはリーディングセラピードッグと呼ばれる犬の話。It’s about a dog called “reading therapy dog”.

子供たちが本を読むのを注意深くじっくりと聞いてあげるので、子供たちに自信を与えているのです。

Those dogs can help children build confidence in reading by listening to them carefully.

このプロセスで、素行の悪かった少年をも更生させます。

The dog even turned a bad boy into a good one during the therapy process.

ところが悲しいことに、この犬は大きな病気を患い数年後に亡くなります。

Sadly the dog dies a few years later of a big disease.

元ワルだった少年が彼に感謝の手紙を書きます。そこで物語は終わります。

The story ends when the ex-naughty boy writes a thank you letter to his mate .

その文章が泣ける泣ける泣ける。

The messages in the letter were so touching that I could not read it through without tears.

涙もろいなんて言わないでくださいね。皆さんもこの物語を読めばきっと頬がぬれるはず。

Don’t call me sentimental. I am sure that tears will run down your cheeks if you read it.

5年ほど前、体重90キロ、ウェスト1メートル、中性脂肪1200だったこの私。かかりつけの医者にはいつ死んでもおかしくないとまで言われていました。

それが今では体重78、ウェスト84、中性脂肪140。

そしてこれが今の自撮り写真。

我ながらよく頑張ったと思っていますが、体育会系の男子高校生Tくんによると、「まだまだっすよ先生。あと4センチは絞らなきゃあ」

えーさらにウエスト4センチしぼれって？　そんな殺生なあ！

運転中よくラジオ聞きます。先日ゴダイゴのBEAUTIFUL NAME がかかり・・・

うわーなつかしい、何十年ぶりだろう。まだ大学生だった。バイトの家庭教師先で子供相手に歌ったこともあったな。

エブリ　チャイル　ハザ　ビュリフォ　ネイム　なんて、カッコつけて歌ってた。

どの子にも名前がある。美しい名前が。

あ、待てよ。

これって授業で使えるんじゃないか。どの生徒にも名前があり、その背景には理由がある。それを各自に調べさせ英語で書かせよう！

と言うわけで中学、高校、大学生の生徒さん達に任意でやらせてみました。

するとどうだろう。みんな積極的に取り組んでくれました。自分の名前の由来をみんなに知って欲しいのだ。これはとても良いことだ。

大輝くんと言う名の生徒は将来大きく輝いて欲しいと言う親の気持ちがあったそうだ。

るな、と言う名の生徒はわざわざ母親に電話をして調べてくれた。出産した日の夜、産婦人科の病院の窓の外に美しい月が出ていた。よし、月にまつわる名前にしよう。でも月子は古すぎるし、ムーンも使えない。そこでlunarに白羽の矢が当たったとのこと。

とても面白い。一人一人の名前にストーリーがある。

我ながら良い企画だったワイ、と自画自賛する冬の日でした。

Amid the avalanche of bad news surrounding us, I am happy to tell you some good ones.

First, I got a message from a person in Tokyo.

It says that they (I use the word “they” to protect the person’s privacy by hiding their gender.) enjoy reading my webpage and find it amusing.

I had known from Google Analytics that there are some frequent visitors to my website in cities like Tokyo, Sapporo, and Osaka.

It is so encouraging that one of them contacted me to say hello.

Second, one of my students sent me the LINE message saying that she finally got this high score on TOEFL.

She has been working hard to make her dream come true, which is to study abroad. So it’s a must for her to get a satisfactory score on this popular exam.

As we all know, TOEFL is very difficult even for advanced learners. But she made it at last – after the lengthy losing streak.

Congratulations! I’m so proud of you !

久しぶりに対面レッスンで名寄へ行ってきました。

リスニングや作文を行う一方で、フィリピン人のメイさんとオンライン会話を体験してもらいました。

題目は

What do you think needs to be improved about your hometown?

ここの学生は7割が道内、3割が北海道外から来ている。私の受け持ち生徒には、京都、大阪、岐阜の出身者もいる。さぞかしいろんな話が出てくるだろうと思いきや、半分近くの学生があげたのはバスや電車などの便数不足だった。

When I was a high school student, I had to commute to school by train. There was only one service in the morning so I had to run to catch it every morning. How nice it would have been if JR had provided more services.

などと怒りを込めて話す学生が結構いた。

これにはメイさんも驚き、Why does the developed country like Japan have a transportation-related problem?

彼女の国にはたくさんの乗り物(トライシクル、ジープニー) があり.運輸の面で不満を抱える人はいないとの事。

日本のような国で、なぜ生徒たちが交通機関に不満を持つのか全く解せない様子だった。

言われてみれば確かに変。フィリピンのような乗り合い自動車があればどれだけ通勤、通学が緩和されるだろう？

おそらく交通を司る行政機関がストップをかけているのだろう。バスやタクシーの利益低下をまねいたら、廃業につながりかねない。

だが一方で子供たち不便を強いることになっている。

堂々巡りの議論、車輪のように虚しく空転するだけ。
