George Akiyama passed away.

He was one-of- a-kind, completely unique anime author of the 1960s and 70s.

He left many masterpieces, among which my favorite was “Patnan X”

It features an elementary school boy who calls himself “Patnan X” and goes patrolling around the town with a commitment to keep it safe and sound.

When something wrong happens, he goes there to get it done. But in most cases he ends up in messing things around.

Other than that, there is nothing special about him – just an ordinary boy that you can find  anywhere.

That’s why I could empathize with him.

Also I like the way Mr.Akiyama describes the good old Showa days. For instance, steam locomotives, wooden electric poles, and old paper airplanes.

We can learn more about the history and culture of Japan.

Also we can refresh our minds.

There will be a chance to get to know people of different cultural backgrounds.

Also we can refresh our minds.

How will our lives change?

TV commentators often say on TV that COVID-19 is changing the way we live.

For example, telework or telecommuting.

At first  people  were annoyed about having to work away from their office.

Now they’re beginning to realize that so many things can be done at home. So much housework can be done, making use of the time saved by not commuting to work.

Dads can connect with their kids. more often than before.

Witnessing many advantages, people begin to question what they were doing.

Was it really necessary to commute to work taking two hours in a crowded train?

Was it really necessary to be relocated leaving your spouse and kids?

Is job more important than your  family?

In spite of all these troubles around us, it is a good chance to take a breath and look at what our lives are all about.

Google

Thete were many gourmet guides in the Edo era. They followed the style of the sumo wrestlers’ ranking list.

The names of the restaurants that served as a judge were written in the part corresponding to the sumo referee.

And the active restaurants were listed in the order of their rank from Ozeki as the top to the lower ones in the columns called Higashi the east and Nishi the west.

It is a story more than a century ago from the time the Michelin guide made its debut.

A booklet type also appeared in the 19th century.

It shows how people in Edo period were so conscious of food.

Apparently it wasn’t clear how they assessed the performance.

Positive learning

It is often said that Japanese students are given very little training on how to speak and write in English. Much of the time in the classroom is spent on how to read and listen .

Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Of course it is bad.

So I encourage my students to expand their imagination and creativity by building a sentence funny enough to make others laugh.

At first, children had no idea on what  to write and how to begin.

So I gave them a key word  that must be included in the  sentence they make

The keyword today was   “Wall.”

A boy student wrote “ A monkey climbed up the wall.”

A girl wrote “ I want to paint my walls pink“

And another boy wrote.“I was riding my bike when I bumped into the wall.”

Everybody in the class started laughing .

I am sure that the children learned not only new vocabulary but also the fun of making sentences on their own.

U.S. author Michael Craiton’s novel The Existence of Fear (Hayakawa Bunko) was an ambitious work that warned of the dangers of science and politics when it came to climate change. Was the eugenics that appeared at the end of the 19th century. It is widely known as the basis for Nazi Germany’s policy of killing people with disabilities as “euthanasia.” It should be noted that at that time many socialists and natural scientists had high expectations for eugenic thought. It also includes prominent economists and writers. It should be remembered that the sterilization law was enacted earlier in the US than in Germany, and was enacted in many countries.

U.S. author Michael Crichton’s “State of Fear” is a novel that enthusiastically warns how dangerous it could be if science and politics got together regarding climate change. One of the examples cited there is “euthanasia”, a 19th-century-born act of ending the life of a person or animal having a terminal illness.  It was notoriously used by Nazis as a reason to murder handicapped people under the name of “relieving suffering from an incurable condition”    It should be noted that many socialists and natural scientists put many expectations on the eugenic concepts in those days. Some prominent economists and writers were also included.   The sterilization law was enacted in the United States earlier than in Germany and   many other countries, which is something we should never forget.
