JR北海道が芦別、赤平、鷲別の3駅を無人化すると発表しました。芦別は私の生まれ故郷。

Japan Railways Hokkaido publicly announced that three stations in the city of Ashibetsu, Akabira , and Washibetsu will be un-manned. Ashibetsu is where I was born.

 

 

同社によると、安全対策の強化と経営改善のために経費節減を進めており、

In their official statement, JR is in the process of implementing cost-saving policies to improve operations through efficient maintenance and ensure passenger safety.

 

これにより1駅１年あたり1000万円の経費節減がみこまれるとか。

A total of up to 10 million　can be saved on both maintenance and labor costs through this initiative per station per year.

 

 

ここ数年事故が続いたJR北海道、後処理に莫大な出費がかさみました。

Over the past several years, JR　Hokkaido had to spend significant expenses for a series of accidents that they had caused.

 

中央政府からの特別融資がなければやっていけない状態。

They are unable to do without the special fund from the central government.

 

従って無人化によるコスト削減は避けて通れないのでしょう。

So removing station staff would be inevitable.

 

なんだか心にぽっかり穴が空いた気分がするなあ。

I　feel like there’s a hole in my heart.

 

私にとって、駅はただ列車を乗り降りする場所ではなく、人生のいろんなストーリーに根付いています。

To　me, railroad stations were not only places to get on or off the train but also deeply rooted in my individual　life stories.

 

 

例えば初めて彼女をデートに誘った時の待ち合わせ場所は駅でした。

For instance, I remember my first time to go on a date. I waited for her to show up at the station

 

母危篤の知らせを聞いて列車に飛び乗り、駅に着いて訃報を知らされ「間に合わなかったよ、ごめんおふくろ」と泣いたこともありました。

 

I also remember jumping on the train after hearing that my mother was dying in the hospital. I got to the destination station, when I got the text that she had just passed away. I dropped on my knees, saying “Sorry, mom. I couldn’t make it in time to see you.”

 

 

 

一つ一つの嬉しい悲しい思い出に駅が登場している気がします。

Each one of those good, happy and sad memories is connected with railroad stations.

一昨日の火曜日、世界を代表する電気メーカー東芝の重鎮が記者会見を行いました。2009年から2014年まで決算報告で総額１５１０億円にも及ぶ利益水増が発覚したのを受けて。

 

Last Tuesday, July 21st, several figure-heads of the technology giant Toshiba held a press conference, relating to the recently discovered act of the inflating of profit and expenditure figures from March of 2009 to December 2014, amounting to a total of ¥151 billion.

 

会見は現社長、前社長、前前社長の３名がそろって行い、頭を下げて謝罪。自分らの在籍期間に不正経理があったことを認めました。

The press conference was held by all three leaders, including the current CEO of the company. They have expressed their apologies to the press by bowing their heads; admitting that the figures were indeed, incorrect for that span of time, all within their terms.

 

ですが水増しについては認めたものの、彼らが進んで指示を出したという点については否定。

Though they recognized the “inflated” numbers, they denied the allegations that the directive of willfully changing the information came from them.

 

 

1980年代、ヨーロッパの某国に赴任していた頃、差別やら何やらでホームシックにかかったことがありました。

I remember, during my overseas assignment in 1980s, I was feeling homesick and really didn’t enjoy my life there because of the racial harassments and so on.

 

そんなある日、テレビを見ていたら、東芝のCMが流れました。異国で聞く自国の会社のコマーシャル。とても勇気づけられ、誇りさえ感じたのを覚えています。

Then, as I was watching TV, I saw a Toshiba commercial; it instantly improved my mood! The short screen time gave me much pride and courage to push on with my stay in that city, as it reminded me of how great things are back home. I felt good that a Japanese company is still doing well over the years.

 

僕だけじゃない。　きっと多くの企業戦士がそのCMに勇気づけられたことでしょう。
It’s not only me but also a lot of corporate worriers who were given courage and pride by the commercial.

しっかりしろ東芝！　Pull yourself together.

 

いやあ、うれしい！　　同業の方からこんな有難いお便りをいただきましたあ。

 

なんと７回目にして英検１級に合格したとの由。

僕は実際何もしていません。すべて彼女の努力の賜物です。

こういう手紙をもらうとストレスも吹っ飛ぶわい～

 

 

野村先生　お久しぶりです
時々先生のウエブを訪問させていただき、そのご活躍ぶりを拝見させていただいておりました。

わたしも、元気にしております。
先月6月に行われた英検1級の試験ではじめて1次試験を突破、7月の2次試験も合格することができ、念願の英検1級合格となりました。
実に7回目の挑戦でしたが、英検1級はもともと私の能力を超えていて、近寄ってはいけないと
思っておりましたので、困難なことも努力で道は拓けるのだと　大変嬉しく感じました。

野村先生にはいろいろと英検1級合格のコツを伝授いただき、ありがとうございました。
リスニングテストでは、先読みして、場面設定を日本語で書きこんだかいあって、今回は
70パーセントの正解率でびっくりいたしました。この早読みがなければ、50パーセントいくか
行かないかだったと思います
単語集はでる順パス単と究極の英単語3.4をほぼ暗記しました。
そのかいあって、一番の語彙の問題は25問中22問正解し読解もスムーズでした。

また中学1年生から高校1年終了までわたしが教えていた男の子も
5回目の挑戦で準1級に合格し二重の喜びとなりました。

これでようやく英語学校の仕事に集中できます

今後も野村先生のご活躍ぶりを励みにさせていただき、私もがんばります

イエーイ　(＾o＾)ﾉ ｲｴｰ!

 

先週土曜、久しぶりに少年時代に帰ることができました。70年代の人気マンガ「ど根性ガエル」が実写版で戻ってきたのです。

Last Saturday, I was able to reminisce my childhood days as I once again saw a show that I used to enjoy as a young boy. DOKONJO GAERU, a very famous manga and TV animation in the early 1970’s, has come back and was shown in live-action!

 

 

ヒロシという名の中学生と、Tシャツにくっついてしまったカエルのピョン吉を中心に展開する物語です。

The story revolves around a frog named Pyonkichi and Hiroshi, a junior high school boy who fell on the frog, making it stick to his shirt, forcing them to be inseparable.

 

見ていて非常に懐かしい思いにふけりました。

The show brought many good memories to me when I saw the new show last week; it was a very nostalgic experience indeed!

 

この古き良きアニメを実写にした背景はCG技術の進歩でしょうね、だってぴょん吉の表情が40年前に比べずっとリアルに見えましたから。

One of the reasons they made a live version of the good-old anime is the advancement of computer graphics technologies. It made Pyounkichi’s facial expressions more realistic than 40 years ago.

 

 

私と同年代の方は是非見て欲しいです。週に一度、子供に帰るのも悪くないですよ。

I urge everyone, especially those who grew up during my time to watch this fantastic TV drama! It will sure to be lots of fun being a kid, at least for one hour each week, again.

“Japan were the better team today. It was a scrappy way to score a goal but you can’t say they didn’t deserve their victory.”

 

今日の日本チームはよかった。　ゴールの仕方はscrappy （ちぐはぐ）だったが、勝利に値しないとは言えない。

 

Japan’s sharp passing game allowed them to dictate terms, with their defensive commitment giving the Matildas no room for creativity.　パスを繰り出す日本の試合ぶりは、終始ゲームを支配し、オーストラリアチームにクリエイティブな戦いをする余裕を与えなかった。

たしかにお金は惜しい。でも２万円浮かせるために本名を変えるのはどうだろう？　親からもらった名前をそうやすやすと変えられるものかねえ？

 

 

英国の男性アダムアームストロングさん（１９）は、女友達と飛行機に乗ろうとしたのだが、空港でチェックインの際に問題が発覚した。違う名前で予約されていたのだ。

 

二人のために予約をしたのは女友達の父親だった。その父親はフェイスブック上の名前、アダムウエストが彼の本名と思い、予約したのだった。

 

それを空港カウンターで告げられたアダムアームストロングさん、こう言う。「あっそれはフェイスブック上の名前です。本名はアダムアームストロング。それでお願いします」

 

それで済むと思っていたアダムスさんだが、航空会社の態度は違った。なんと名義変更料として220ポンド、337ドルを求めたのだった。日本円で約41,000円、運賃の倍以上の金額だ。

 

こういう場合、ルールは航空会社によってまちまち。無料で変更してくれるところもあるのだが、彼らが乗るライアンエアー（RYANAIR）は高額を要求する方針だった。悪質な旅行業者が偽名を使って安く航空券を仕入れ、高く転売するケースがあとを絶たない。それを防ぐ意図があったのだ。

 

というわけで可哀想なアダムくん、素直に41,000円を支払うと思いきや、そうしなかった。

なんと本名をアダムウエストに変えてしまったのだ。イギリスでは実名変更は無料。そしてそれに基づいたパスポート発行手数料が158ドル。日本円で2万円を切る。そのほうが安く済むという計算だった。

 

俺が同じ立場ならどうするかなあ？　２万円を浮かせるためにわざわざ実名を変えるだろうか？　まずしないと思う・・・ 　　以下英文記事です。

What do you do when an airline wants to charge you $337 after you discover that the wrong name was accidentally listed on your plane ticket? Why, legally change your name, of course!

That’s what 19-year-old British citizen Adam Armstrong did when he realized that his girlfriend’s father had booked a Ryanair plane ticket for him under his Facebook moniker — Adam West — instead of his real name. (Yes Adam West, as in the Batman character.)

“Her stepdad got my name from Facebook, but I had put it as Adam West as a joke, because he was the actor who played Batman on TV,” he told the British newspaper, The Sun.

Armstrong appealed to Ryanair, but the budget airline wouldn’t budge: it wanted to levy £220 ($337) in fees to fix the mistake. This is actually double the normal name-change fee of £110 because Armstrong shared the booking with his girlfriend, so both tickets would need to be amended. Ryanair is known for its strict and hefty fees, including £45 ($69) to check-in at the airport and up to £75 ($115) to check a suitcase.

The savvy teenager discovered that it would actually be cheaper to legally change his name (free!) and get a new passport for £103 ($158). And so he did it, legally changing his name to his Facebook pseudonym.

Armstrong (now West) told an Irish radio show, Today FM why he took such an extreme route: “I’m not giving Ryanair a penny.“

In response, Ryanair issued a statement to explain why the airline is so strict about change fees: “A name change fee is charged in order to discourage and prevent unauthorized online travel agents from ‘screenscraping’ Ryanair’s cheapest fares and reselling them on to unwitting consumers at hugely inflated costs.”
