現役医師のDさんとフィリピン人のAnさんをまじえ、フリートークしました。話題は水泳選手の池江璃花子さん。

私）　I was very shocked by the news of the swim star Rikako Ikee diagnosed with leukemia.
Dさん)　So was I.
An) Have you ever been involved in a treatment of  patients with leukemia?
Dさん）　Yes, I have.  I mean as an anesthesiologist for a donor who donated his bone marrow.
私）　How long does a bone marrow donor have to be under anesthesia?
Dさん）　Nornally a few hours. It depends on each individual case, though.
An)  I had thought that the operation of transplanting bone marrow would take much longer time.
Dさん）　The transplanting operation itself takes about an hour only. But the donor has to stay hospitalized for a few days.
私）　What do you think is the most important for Rikako Ikee aside from finding a matching donor?
Dさん）　As a doctor, I can say she needs a strong mind.
An)  Strong mind? 
Dさん）　Yes,  the treatment of leukemia is long and painful. So patients are sometimes losing patience. Some refuse further treatment in the worst case.
私）So Rikako-san has to have a vigorous mentality to conquer her suffering. 
An)  Let’s keep our fingers crossed that God will grant her another chance to rise to the top.

インフルエンザが流行っています。私の生徒も軒並みダウン。　　なかには親子そろって感染した人も・・・受験生は特に気を付けてほしいですね。
TBS番組の「報道特集」でアンカーの膳場貴子さんが語っていたコメントを愚英訳してみました。

体力の弱い高齢者にとってインフルエンザは非常に危険なものである。Influenza is very dangerous for physically weak elderly people.
高齢者の施設でインフルエンザを予防するために入所者に薬を使うかどうかは施設の判断にゆだねられている。It is up to each facility’s decision as to whether or not they give medicine to every senior in the nursery homes as a preventive measure against the deadly disease.
ただ心配なのは、みんなが予防目的で薬を使うようになると、耐性ウイルスが増えるのではないかだ。However, there is one concern. If everyone comes to use such prophylactic  drugs,   it might induce the development of a new kind of virus that is drug resistant.
使い方についてはもう少し明確な基準があるのがのぞましいのではないだろうか？We feel it is more desirable to have sharply defined standards regarding its usage.
私が訪れた介護施設は、入居者に予防接種をさせ、さらなる予防としての薬も準備している。The nursing home I visited had residents have influenza vaccines injected. Also some medicines are available there for further prevention.
それでもなおウイルスを完全に消し去ることはできない。Even so it is difficult to fight off viruses perfectly.
つまるところ、うがい、手洗い、よく食べ、よく寝るなどの日常生活が病気に対する免疫を持つ強い身体を作るのだ。It eventually reduces to daily routine such as gargling , washing hands,  eating well, and sleeping well that help build a strong body.immune to diseases.

最近日韓関係が危うくなっているようです。

歴史認識を始め領土、レーダー照射・・・論争の火種は後を絶ちません。

嫌韓ブームという言葉が示すように、韓国を嫌う人が多いそうですが、私は嫌いではないです。

 

私は若いころ海運業界にいたので韓国の船会社と仕事する機会が数多くありました。初めのうちは無愛想でとてもやりにくかった。挨拶しても微笑まず、日本人が嫌いなんだ、というそぶりをわざと見せつける態度でした。でも回を重ねて会っているうちにだんだんと打ち解けあい、和やかな間柄になっていったのを覚えています。ある晩、仕事を終えて一休みしているときに、彼らの一人から小瓶をわたされました。ラベルには「真露」（じんろ）と書かれていました。「なんだいこれ？」とたずねると、「韓国で一番の焼酎だ、飲め」ひとこと。

いきなり始まった職場宴会。小皿に盛ったキムチを肴にぐいぐい飲みながら、いろんな話をしました。将来の夢、好きな女性のタイプ、会うたびに老けてゆく故郷の両親・・・ 。なんだか話せば話すほど彼らとの距離が縮まってゆく気がしました。　たったこれだけの経験で偉そうに言うのもおこがましいのですが、私は韓国人を嫌いにはなれません。初めはぶしつけに見えるけれど、膝を突き合わせてじっくり話し合えばきっと理解してくれる民族だと思っています。両国の関係がこれ以上悪化しないことを切に祈ります。

日本と韓国の政府間の関係が、しばらく例がないほど冷え込んでしまった。

The relationship between the Japanese and Korean governments has worsened almost unprecedentedly.

 

李明博大統領が、両国が領有権を争う竹島（島根県、韓国名　独島）に歴代大統領で初めて上陸した上、天皇訪韓の条件として過去の植民地政策への謝罪を求める発言をしたためだ。

This is because of the Korean President Lee Myung-Bak who not only paid the first official visit to Takeshima island , Shimane prefecture (Korean name Dokdo) whose ownership is claimed by both countries, but also stated that Japan’s emperor must apologize for  its past colonial rule in the Korean peninsula if he wants to visit South Korea. .

 

一国のリーダーとして配慮を欠く言動と言わざるを得ない。

This is hardly an attitude by the leader of a country, we must say.

 

野田佳彦首相が送った抗議の親書を送り返してきたのも外交儀礼上首をかしげてしまう。

Also Korea returned a letter that the Prime Minister Noda had written to them personally. Such an undiplomatic gesture makes us wonder why.

 

日本政府は通貨交換協定の見直しなど対抗措置を表明した。

Japanese government has announced some countermeasures including the temporary suspension of the bilateral currency swap agreement.

 

しかし日韓は「自由と民主主義、基本的人権等の基本的価値を共有する重要な隣国同士」であることを忘れてはならない。

But we must not forget that the two countries are important neighbors sharing fundamental values such as freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights.

 

両国政府とも冷静になり、問題を広げることなく、じっくりと話し合い解決を目指すべきだ。

Instead of aggravating the problem, both governments should stay calm, hold talks and work their way to a solution.
