As we told you last night, the fishing waters of the Gulf are re-opening , the surface oil fading.（昨日お伝えしたとおり、メキシコ湾の海面上の油が消えかかっているので、漁場が再開されることになりました。） But is that oil in the creature underneath?（しかしその油は、水面下にいる生物の体内にはいっているのではないでしょうか？） Jeffrey Kofman went to find out.（ジェフリーコフマンが調べに行きました）
This is what it looked like in the Gulf a few weeks ago, when we reported finding huge plumes of oil hidden below the surface. （これが2週間前の海中の映像です。海中に多くの油の粒が漂っていることを報じたころでした。）
But in the two weeks since the leaking well was capped, government and independent scientists have done extensive testing in the deep sea. It is not what they expected. （流出を食い止めてから2週間のあいだ、政府や独立機関の科学者たちが深海を広範囲に調べてきました。ですが考えていたほどの状況にはなっていません）
We’re finding the hydrocarbons around the well, but as we move away from the well, they move almost to background traces in the water column.（油井の周りには炭化水素がありますが、油井から離れると・・・）
We survey scientists across the Gulf Coast and many pointed to the same answer. （メキシコ湾にいる科学者に対して調べたところ、多くが同じ答えを指摘しました）These deep sea microbes called cycrophiles. （それはサイクロファイルと呼ばれる深海の微生物です） They occur naturally in the waters of Gulf and when there is oil, they multiply to eat it. （メキシコ湾に自然に現れて、油があると繁殖してその油を食べるのです）When a large amount of oil comes into the environment, then they quickly muster if you will. And they can sometimes grow into a thousand fold.（大量の油が入ってきた場合は急速に集まり、一千倍の大きさに変身することもあります。）
They are also not finding the oil in sea food. （海産物からは油は発見されていません）This independent lab has been testing fish from Louisiana coast, since the disaster began. （この独立研究所では、被害発生の時からルイジアナ沿岸の魚をテストしてきました）The state has tested fifteen thousand sea food samples. （州ではすでに1万5千もの見本を調べてきました）Not a single one has shown elevated levels of oil contaminants.（油により汚染の度合いが高まったものはひとつもありません）
What are you finding? （なにか見つかっていますか）
We are not finding very much at all. But that does not mean all is well in the ocean. （これといって有りません。しかし、それだからと言って海に居る生物のすべてが大丈夫という意味にはなりませんけれども）
Scientists worry about the littlest creatures like these blue crab larvae.（一方、科学者たちは小さな生物、たとえなこのカニの幼虫に心配を寄せています）
Those microscopic orange drops, a fraction of a millimeter have never been seen before.（この小さなオレンジ色の粒は、1ミリにも満たない大きさではありますが、以前はまったく見られませんでした） Scientists worry that is dispersed oil from the spill. It is so small that tests will take time.（海中で漏れた油の一部だろうと科学者は見ていますが余りに小さいため調べるのに時間がかかります）
We just don’t know enough right now to say whether there’s been large effects or not.（現時点では情報量が足りない為、大きな影響があるのかどうかわかりません）
Now this cold storage tells the story of the spill’s impact on the Louisiana fishing industry.(ここの冷凍倉庫は、原油漏れ事故がルイジアナの漁業界に与えた衝撃を物語ってくれます。) It’s normally filled to the rafters there.（通常ですと倉庫は（カニで）一杯になり、あの梁のところまでとどくのですが） Right now, they are in such short supply they’re having to bring in Venezualan crab to fill orders.（今は供給が少ないため、注文をまかなうのにベネズエラからカニを輸入している状態です）
But that is going to change quickly. Today, Mississippi opened most of its fisheries.Fisheries here in Louisiana east to the Mississippi also open today.（しかしこんな状況もあとわずか。今日ミシシッピ州はほとんどの漁場を開き、ミシシッピ川東側のルイジアナ州の漁場も本日再開しました。） We are told within two weeks most of Louisiana’s fisheries will be reopened.
