9月6日に北海道を襲った地震はが震度が最大7ありました。
The earthquake that hit Hokkaido on September 6th measured a maximum 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale.
私の住む旭川市は幸い震度４で、被害は少なくてすみました。
Fortunately, the area where I live (Asahikawa) indicated 4 and the damages were not as bad.
それでも停電や断水に見舞われ、水と電気が自由に使えない生活を36時間すごしました。
But we had blackouts and subsequent water outage. I had to live without electricity and water for 36 hours.
電気のない暮らしの何と不便なことか！
How inconvenient our lives would become!
停電が始まったとき、私のスマホはバッテリー残量３５％。 心細かったです。
When the power was down my smartphone’s battery level was only 35 percent.
今朝の新聞によると、北海道で身動きが取れなくなった何千人もの外国人観光客が緊急情報を英語で得られなかったことを不満に感じたそうです。According to this morning’s newspaper, thousands of non Japanese travellers trapped in Hokkaido were expressing feelings of resentment because they could not get emergency information in English.
避難所はどこか？ 食料や水はどこで手に入る？ こういった情報さえです。
even such information as “where they can take shelter.” and “where they can get food and water”
あるアメリカ人旅行者は、「空港内で泊まれること、毛布を無料支給してくれることも知らなかった。せめて英語で知らせてくれたら。」と不満を漏らしていました。
A tourist from USA complained “I didn’t know that people could sleep overnight in the airport terminal with a free blanket. If only someone had told me in English.”
外国人観光客の不満はSNSで拡散してしまい、これから訪れようとしている人たちがキャンセルする事態になり、道内各地のホテルや観光施設が茫然自失になっています。The foreign travelers’ complaints spread through the social media , leading to a sudden cancellation by a tremendous number of people who were planning to visit Hokkaido pretty soon. Hotels and resorts are stunned at the incident.
彼の近くにはたくさん日本人がいたはず。その中のだれかが「空港に泊まれますよ。無料で毛布を貸してくれますよ。」と言えたなら、彼の日本に対するイメージは悪くならずに済んだのでは、と思います。
There must have been a lot of Japanese around him. If one of them had said to him ,”You can stay overnight in the airport.”, his impression of Japan wouldn’t have been so bad.
北海道は経済発展の主な産業として観光業に頼らざるを得ないのですから。
Hokkaido can’t help but rely on tourism as a main industry for its economic growth.
