Ukraine and Russia have been at war for almost a month.

この１ヶ月、ウクライナとロシアは戦闘状態が続いています。

I had a few chances to get to know some East Europeans and Russians while I was working for a trading company. They were very friendly, open-minded and easy to deal with.

1990年代に貿易会社で働いていたとき、東ヨーロッパやロシアの人々と知り合う機会がありました。

みんなフレンドリーで、開放的で、近づきやすい人たちでした。

Now it makes me sad to see them killing each other.

両国が殺戮を繰り返しているのを見ると悲しくなります。

Luckily or unluckily, I have never seen or experienced a war directly. But I remember having been told by my father how atrocious war is.

幸か不幸か私は戦争を見たり体験したことはありませんが、どんなに悲惨なのか父から聞いたことがあります。

He was in Chiba on March 10th, 1945.

父は1945年3月10日、千葉にいました。

He witnessed a part of the sky turn blood red in the direction of Tokyo. He soon realized it was an air raid by the US army.

東京方面の空が血の様に赤く染まるのを見て、米軍による空襲だと気づいたそうです。

Before long, there was a smell – similar to the one in cremation center.

It was so strong – strong enough to tell that a countless number of human bodies were being burned during the attack by the U.S. Air Force.

まもなく付近ににおいが立ち込めました。火葬場と同じにおい。米軍の攻撃によって無数の人々の体が焼かれているのだと思った。

This story was told to me by my father about 50 years ago. It was so shocking that it still remains vivid in my memory.

この話を父から聞いたのはおよそ半世紀前。子供の頃でした。とてもショックで今でもまだ記憶から消し去ることができません。

I want them to stop killing right now. The revenge spiral must be stopped somewhere before it is too late.

もう殺し合いはやめてほしい。復讐のスパイラルはどこかで止めなくてはなりません。

少し前になりますが英国の男性と会話する機会があったのでアップします。シェークスピアのことを偉そうに語る資格などないくせに、と思われる御仁もいらっしゃるでしょうが、ぜひ聞いてみてください。

One of my students sent me a photograph.

“Nomura Sensei. I’ve made a sweater for my dog. Take a look.”

“How cute it is! How did you learn to make it?” I asked her.

“I saw some YouTube tutorials and got interested in a handmade work called crochet.”she replied.

“Do you use the machine or your hands?”

“I do it all by hands. It gives me a chance to sit , relax , and enjoy my time.”

I like the way she puts it.

Doing things in a traditional way surely gives you something special.

I remember my childhood days. My mother was weaving yarns to make me a muffler for the upcoming winter. It took her many days to finish the handmade job. It didn’t matter to her how long it would take. She was just enjoying her time.

Mom did not care if her cat played with her yarn balls and ended up in tangled messes.

ひょんなことからアメリカ人と話をする機会に恵まれました。趣味と実益を兼ねて写真屋をやっているそうです。残念ながら顔出しはダメと言うことで、2人の話している文章を載せることにしました。

昨日月曜日、英検の合格発表ありました。

合格した生徒やその親から喜びのLINEが送られてきましたので紹介させていただきます。

東京に住む先輩が久々にSNSに投稿した。貿易会社に勤めていた時お世話になった上司だ。

年齢は71、しかしまだ引退せずシニアスタッフとして世界を飛び回っている。

つい最近手がけた仕事はトンガへの給水車輸送。

国の支援事業として請け負ったのだが、現地で給水活動していると知ってやりがいを感じたそうだ。

もう71歳、じゃないまだ71歳。彼の活躍はまだまだ続く。

僕も負けちゃいられない。63歳、でも塾は続けます！

1月24日は名寄市立大学の後期最後の授業日。

受け持ちの1年生2年生はとても良い学生ばかりだった。居眠りやおしゃべり、 スマホをチラ見するなど1人もいなかった。別れが惜しい。

さて授業後、英語科講師たちに食事に誘われた。4月に新学期が始まるまで しばしのお別れ。アメリカ人やカナダ人の先生たちと飲み食いするのも悪くない。参加することにした。

選んだのは郊外のフレンチレストラン。なかなか渋い家屋だ。

コースメニューにワインやビール。普段はお堅い外国人講師たちもこの日ばかりは無礼講、楽しいひとときだった。　２時間はあっという間に過ぎて解散、次は夏にやりましょうと誓い合った。

Many Japanese say they hated sitting through English classes in school. Yes, grammar lessons can be boring, textbooks can be difficult and teachers may not be engaging enough. High school English teacher and TikTok English coach Kengo Tateishi is no exception.

“Back in school, baseball was my passion. I wasn’t interested in English at all,” says Tateishi, whose TikTok account has about 40,000 followers. “But when I studied English literature at university, everything changed. My English skills took off. I got a near-perfect score on TOEIC. I passed Grade 1 in Eiken.”

The man responsible for Tateishi’s metamorphosis was his professor, who taught him a read-aloud method that was systematic and scientific.

“By reading out loud, the sentences start registering in your brain. It’s an organic process that lets you understand how phrases work and sentences are structured. The grammar starts to make sense, and in the process you learn a lot about the culture of English-speaking countries, and Japanese culture as well.”

Upon graduation, Tateishi got a job with a trading company but quit when he realized that his enthusiasm for English linked directly to a love of teaching it.

“I reentered university to get a teaching license and come to terms with why I wanted a teaching career so much in the first place.” 

His motivation stems from a desire to change the Japanese education system in a way that will benefit both teachers and students.

“Right now, public school teachers are underappreciated by society and their students while being overwhelmed by their workloads. I’m convinced that it doesn’t have to be this way.”

Currently, Tateishi teaches English at a Tokyo metropolitan high school while his TikTok videos have launched him on the fast track to English educator-cum-rock star.

“Kids today will not be motivated to study unless they understand the how, what and why of studying English. In other words, teachers must take a more systematic approach and explain to their classes how exactly their teaching methods work and the effect this will have on the students’ grades.”

English speaking (and teaching) still has a long way to go in Japan, but Tateishi is hopeful. He endorses a method called yoshuku, which means celebrating in advance.

“Athletes use this method before their competitions. Picture in your mind the celebrations you’ll savor once you’ve reached a specific goal. For athletes, this could mean the applause and the cheers. Having a celebratory scenario can make all the difference in your motivation levels.”

南太平洋のトンガ付近で大規模な噴火が発生してから丸一日がたちましたが、現地の詳しい被害の状況はわかっていません。

さあ、明日から共通テスト。大学を目指す高校3年生は緊張していることだろう。

当塾には4人在籍している。ぜひ第一志望に合格してほしいと願っている。

風邪やコロナ感染を考慮して対面授業は年末で終わりにした。

北高のA君からLINEが来た。10分でいいから野村先生の声が聞きたいと言う。

「いったいどうした。明日から共通テストなんだから、早く寝ろよ。俺の声なんか聞いてどうするんだよ？」

「験担ぎです」

「ん？ゲンカツギ？　何が？」

「前日に野村先生の授業を受けたときの模擬試験はいつも結果が良かったんです」

「マジ？　そんなこと言われたの初めてだよ！」

なごやかに10分ほど話した後、電話を切った。

切ったあと、なぜかしら目頭が熱くなった。入試の前夜に僕の声が聞きたいなんて、嬉しい。
