北海道での年末年始の過ごし方は他地域と違います。ケンミンショーに出てきそうな話題です。昨秋、道産子の彼と結婚。札幌の夫の実家で年越しをしました。 何が驚いたかとといって、大みそかの夜にお節料理やおすし、タラバガニなどのごちそうが出てきたことです。私の生まれ育った関東地方では、大みそかはテレビを見ながらミカンなどをつまんで、年越しそばを食べるだけ。元旦にごちそうが並んで新年を祝うのです。一日の朝はどうなるのかと思っていたら、あっさりとお雑煮だけ。なんだかもの足りなくて拍子抜けしました。(北海道新聞 ２０１１年１月１９日）① 年越しをする：see the old year out and the new year in② ごちそう delicacy③ 拍子抜けする feel out of rythm（試訳）Last autumn, I got married with my husband who was born in Hokkaido. And I saw the old year out and the new year in at his parent’s house. What was amazing was that on New Year’s eve, many delicacies were placed on the table such as Osechi (traditional Japanese New Year’s food), Sushi, King Crab legs.In the Kanto area where I was born and grew up, New Year’s eve is usually spent with such simple food as buckwheat noodles and tangerines that are eaten while watching TV. Lavish food are not served until January 1st.So having leant that Hokkaido people eat gorgeous food on Dec.31st, I was curious what they’ll eat on Jan. 1st. Discouragingly enough though, it was rice cakes with soup. I felt out of rhythm.

道北を巡るバスツアーに参加した時のこと。出発時刻になっても姿を現さない人がいました。添乗員があちこち連絡を取っていたら、定刻から20分ほど過ぎてから男女二人が乗車してきました。 おかげで出発が遅れたのですが、謝りもせず悪びれたそぶりもなし。出発後今度は車内で女性グループがお菓子などを食べながら大声でおしゃべり。添乗員の観光案内の声も聞こえず迷惑です。団体行動です。気持ちのいい旅のためにマナーを守ってください。

This is a story when I was on a bus tour to Dohoku area (Northern Hokkaido).
Somebody failed to show up in time for the departure time. The tour guide got in touch with some places to find this missing person.
Finally came on board a man and a woman with no word of apology or self reflection. and the bus started moving about twenty minutes behind schedule. And then, there was a group of girls chatting loudly while eating snacks. So I couldn’t hear the tour guide’s explanation clearly, which was quite annoying.
I want to say to those people that group tour members must obey rules to make their tour comfortable.

毎日通勤で通る道で気になっていることがあります。いつも通るその道は冬は車一台分くらいの幅しか除雪されておらず、歩道は除雪後の雪が山積み。近く小学校に通う子どもたちは仕方なく車道を歩くしかありません。車とすれ違う時は交通事故に巻き込まれるのではないかといつもひやひやします。幹線道路の除雪も大事ですが、子どもたちの安全のためにも通学路の歩道を最優先で除雪してほしいものです。（1月３1日 道新）
There’s something on my mind about the road I take everyday on my way to work. For this road, the snow shoveling is not done enough, making it as wide as a single car lane.
The shoveled snow gets pushed aside, blocking people from walking on the sidewalks. Thus, children going to school or a facility have no option but to walk on the road instead. It makes me shiver every time I see cars passing by, causing me to fear the kids might get involved in an accident.
It’s important to clear trunk roads of snow. But I want the authority to carry out snow clearance on school roads for school children’s safety .

料理に使うため、ピーマンに似た野菜のパプリカを一個買ってきました。
大きめの黄色いパプリカでしたが、ヘタの近くに傷みがあったので輪切りにすると、なんと実の中に同じ色の小さなパプリカが胎児みたいに入っていたんです。
家庭菜園でピーマンを栽培していますが、こんなのは見たことがなくびっくりしました。ひょとしたら何かいいことがある前兆かもしれないですね。夫は「宝くじでも買っておけ」ですって。(北海道新聞 ２０１１年１月２５日）
I bought a paprika, a vegetable that looks like Japanese “peeman”, for my cooking purpose.
It was big and yellow.
There were some bruises near the calyx, so I thought of cutting it into round slices.
As soon as I cut it open, there was another paprika of the same color inside. It looked like an unborn baby growing inside.
I grow “peeman” (green peppers) in my own vegetable garden, but nothing like this happened to me before.
Maybe this is a sign of good luck.
“Why not buy some lottery tickets?” says my husband.

地産地消をうたった懸賞に私と夫の名前で２通応募しました。あまり期待せずにいたところ、主催者から当選の知らせがあり、希望した魚の一夜干しセットが届きました。大好物のツボダイのほかホッケ、カレイ、など５種類の干物が１０点ほど入っていて夫婦で大喜びです。六日間続けて夕飯でいただきましたが、日頃スーパーで購入している干物とは違い、どれも特上品で大満足でした。久々にうれしい思いを味わいましたよ。（北海道新聞 ２０１１年１月１７日号）
My husband and I signed for a prize contest whose slogan was “Produce locally, consume locally”. We sent in two applications with our names respectively.
Though not expecting to win, we got a notice from the authority that we won the prize, a set of “Ichiyaboshi ” or overnight dried fish we had wished for.
There were about ten fish of five species, such as my favorite Tsubodai (Japanese armorhead), Hokke (Atka mackerel), Karei (Flatfish).
We were both pleased with the prize. We ate them for dinner for six consecutive days. All of them were of high quality and not the kind that you can get at a regular superstore. We never had tasted happy moments like this for a long time.
これって新聞記事の価値あるかなあ？
いつもの「はいはい道新」を英訳しながら考えました。この女性、気の毒だとは思うけど、新聞に載せるほどの話かな？

街でテレビ局の方から「生放送のクイズ番組に出ませんか」と声を掛けられました。見たことのある番組だったので「出ます」と答えた後、時間があったので化粧直しをして心の準備をしていました。ところが集合場所に行くと何人かの人がいて、出場者は抽選で決めるとのこと。残念ながら私は外れでした。勇気を振り絞って出場を決意したのにがっかりです。応募者が多ければ抽選は当たり前なんでそうけれど、それなら初めからきちんと伝えてください。(北海道新聞 2011年1月11日号）
While in town, I was approached by a TV station who asked me if I wanted to be on a live quiz show. The program name was familiar to me so I said “Yes.”
Then there was a little time availabe so I touched up my makeup while making a mental preparation.
When I got to the meeting place (designated by the TV station) , however, I saw some other people waiting there too. It was then I was told that the panelists would be chosen by lottery. Unfortunately I couldn’t win it. I had to take all my courage to decide on showing up on TV, so my disappointment was all the greater.
It’s understandable that lottery should be a natural process if applicants are more than necessary. But if that’s the case, why didn’t they tell me so in advance?

来春卒業予定の多くの高校生が、就職先を決めることが出来ないまま年を越そうとしている。今年は特に、大学生や専門学校生が高校生向けの就職戦線に流れ込んでくるケースが目立ち、少ない求人を、ともに苦境に立つ若者同士が奪い合っている構図だ。各高校は「大学生と比べられると高校生は不利」と頭を抱えている。
一方で企業側は採用に有利な買い手市場を最大に活用している。札幌市内の卸会社の担当者は「景気が良いころ大学生があまり関心を持ってくれなかったが、今は優秀な人材が集まる。高校生には申し訳ないが、会社の将来を担う人材となると、大学生に目が行く」と語る。
Majority of job searching students of senior high schools are facing a new year with no certain prospect of employment.
What is striking about this year is that seniors of vocational schools, colleges and universities are moving into the job market of high school seniors, thus creating a situation where impatient youngsters are fighting for a small number of job offers. Senior high school authorities are tearing their hair out over having to fight an uphill battle with college grads.
On the other hand, employers are taking full advantage of the buyer oriented markets. Here’s a comment by the personnel of a wholesale company in Sapporo. “When business was good, not much interest was taken by college graduates. But now, excellent ones gather at our doors for an interview. Feeling sorry for senior high students, I cannot stop prioritizing college graduates for the company’s future.”

雪が遅いせいか、今年はやけに枯れ葉が目立ちます。 風の吹き具合によるのでしょうか。 わが家にはそこかしこから枯れ葉が集まってくるのです。先日の強風のときは大変でした。塀や玄関は言うに及ばす、奥まった所にある車庫の前には、多くの枯れ葉に交じって発泡スチロールや空のペットボトルが吹き寄せられていました。枯れ葉は数袋に分け、ゴミ収集にだしましたが、これも有料です。風が相手じゃ、文句も言えませんもんね。
There are an awful lot of dead leaves seen this winter, probably because we have less snowfall than usual.
Many of them , blown from here and there, gather around my house. I wonder if this is done by wind-related factos.
The recent heavy storm was so terrible that it left me drifts of such leaves, styrene foam particles, and empty PET bottles – in front of my garage far from the road, as well as my fence and my entrance.
I had to put those leaves in a several bags and place them out for collection service.
Of course it costs me money. But there’s no point in blaming the wind.

昼食のために会社近くの地下飲食街に行きました。どの店も混んでいましたが、たまたますいている店が目につき飛びこみました。見渡すと店内が煙草の煙で煙っています。店前に「全面禁煙」の掲示があったはず、と思って再度見たらなんと「全席喫煙」。 煙草は好きではないのですが、他の店を探す時間もなかったので食事しました。 禁煙の店は年々増えていますが、逆に全面的に喫煙を打ち出した店を見るのは初めてです。驚きました。（１２月７日）
I was looking for somewhere to take a lunch in the underground food court near my office.
Every restaurant I walked by seemed crowded, but I happened to find one that was less crowded so I dashed in there.
Looking around, I saw a lot of cigarette smoke wafting throughout the room.
I took a second look at the signboard at the entrance, thinking to myself that it said “ALL NON SMOKING SEATS”.
Actually it was opposite – “ALL SMOKING SEATS”! My jaw almost dropped,
I didn’t want to inhale smoke while eating my lunch, but I took the table because I didn’t have enough time to find another restaurant.
Non smoking places are on the increase year by year. And it was my first time to see a restaurant where smoking is totally allowed.

欧米に住む旧友から「英訳した新聞記事が面白い」とのメールをいただきました。
いままで主に訳してきたのは北海道新聞の「はいはい道新」、身近なネタの宝庫です。これからも調子に乗って翻訳し、掲載していきたいと思います。
それでは今日は11月25日の記事をご紹介します。
やや離れたスーパーまで自転車で出かけ、漬物用野菜などをどっさり買いました。荷物で自転車が重くなったので帰りは近道をしようと通りなれない道に入ったところで迷ってしまいました。ジョギング中の男性に道を尋ねたら、親切にも道案内に付いてきてくれ、上り坂では自転車を押してくれました。見覚えのある道まで来たのでお礼を言うと、男性は走り去りました。お名前は聞けませんでしたが、たすかりました。
I went to a grocery store with my bicycle. The store was a little far away from home. There I bought a lot of vegetables to make pickles. On my way back home, I found my bike harder to pedal due to the heavy purchases in the basket.
So I took a shortcut but lost my way unfortunately.
Then I asked a guy jogging by to help me find my way home.
He was kind enough to guide me along and push my bike uphill.
When we finally reached my familiar street, I thanked him.
He soon ran away and I couldn’t even ask his name.
I want to tell him once again that I appreciate his help.
