道内某TV局の職員が「私の英作文ブログを見ている」と伝えてきました。
驚いた私は「ええ、マジっすかあ?」 
いやはや名誉なことだと思います。
今朝の北海道新聞のコラム「卓上四季」を前半だけ訳してみました。
福岡で7月前半に催される博多祇園山笠。祭りを奉納する櫛田神社の氏子たちはこの期間中キュウリを食べない。切り口の模様が御神紋に似ており、口にするのは畏れ多いからだという。
The Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival which  is held  in Fukuoka every year between July 1st and 15th , is hosted by  Kumada shrine.  During this event, the UJIKO (parishioners) at the shrine never eat cucumber because its cut end looks so much like the shrine emblem that eating may lead to showing disrespect.
神聖さとは逆の、不浄だという教えからイスラム教の信者は豚肉を食べない。
Muslims avoid eating pork for the opposite reason – it’s unclean.
思えば食のタブーはいろいろある。
Come to think of it, there are many eating taboos. 
日本では消化に良くないという理由からてんぷらとスイカ、ウナギと梅干のような食べ合わせを嫌う習慣もある。
In Japan, people abhor eating  a certain combination of food for indigestive reasons.  For instance, tempura and watermelon  ; unagi (eel)  and umebosi (pickled plum).
さてここで問題。 Now let me ask you a question, folks.
政治家が食べてはいけないものは何? What are politicians not supposed to eat?
答えは自らの言葉。
 The answer is the words of their own.
一度口にした言葉を、飲み込んでまるでなかったかのようにふるまうと「食言」と批判され、人々の信頼を失う。
If a person pretends as if he didn’t say what he said,  he gets blamed for “SHOKUGEN” (word eating) and loses public trust.
安倍晋三首相は「森友学園の小学校認可や国有地払い下げに私や妻が関係していたとなれば、首相も国会議員も辞める」と断言した。
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe clearly said that he would resign as prime minister and as a Diet member if he or his wife, Akie, were involved in the dubious sale of state-owned land to school operator Moritomo Gakuen or in the relaxing of school-approval system rules. 
ところが財務省文書で昭恵夫人の関与が濃厚になると、金銭を伴う関与がないという意味だと言い換えたのだ。
 
But now that Finance Ministry’s documents show Akie’s involvement more evidently ,  he says  “I mean  I was not involved  in the context” of accepting bribes.”
