今年はジョンレノン生誕７０周年、逝去３０周年、ビートルズ結成５０周年、解散４０周年にあたる年。（なぜこんなに区切れいいのだろう？）
ニューヨークの暗殺現場には今年も大勢のファンが訪れて追悼したそうです。いつか僕も参加して、一緒にイマジンを歌いたいと考えています。

生きていれば70歳を迎えたんですね。ジョンがいなくなってからしばらくして、「70歳のジョンなんて、見たくないから、これで良かったのかも」と自分自身を慰めようとしたら、妹が「いや、ジョンなら、きっと素敵な70歳になっていたと思う」と反論したことを覚えています。今なら私もそう思います。

最初、ここはbut thinking of seventy would make him smileと、仮定法なのかなと思ったのですが、これは、Yoko Ono said that thinking of …ということなのですね。つまり、実際、ジョンは生前、70歳の自分を想像して、にっこり笑ったことがあったということですね。2番目のthatは省略できない、と学校では習いますが、そりゃあ、話言葉ではいくらでも、省略しちゃいますよね。

仮定法の件、おっしゃるとおりですね。私はいつも自分に都合のいい解釈しかしないので、「草葉の陰でジョンが笑ってる」と訳していました。反省・・・
