今日金曜日学校で準2級を受験したSさんから、ライティング問題の題目が「学校祭（school festival)は生徒にとって必要か」だったと情報提供ありました。
さてどう回答しましょうかね？
学校祭は、勉強に忙しい学生たちに一種のやすらぎのひと時をあたえる。School festivals give a relaxing time to the students who are busy in studying.
キャンプファイアー、歌、踊りなど長い人生の中で、いつまでも残る思い出を作れる。Festival events such as a campfire, singing and dancing will leave an ever lasting memory for every one concerned,
生徒たちが懸命に打ち込んできたことを披露するチャンスを与えてくれる。Students will have a chance to showcase what they have worked so hard on.

中高生の母親から問い合わせをいただくときは、メールか電話です。
When I get inquiries from mothers of high school students, they are either through email or phone.
メールの時は、メルアドをみます。するとある「傾向」があることに気づきます。 l look at their email addresses, I noticed a widespread tendency.
それは、アットマークの手前に80年代のアイドルを連想させる文言が使われていること。田原俊彦、近藤真彦、ゴダイゴ、チェッカーズ。That is, the part before @ sign often suggest their favorite artists of the 80’s, such as Tahara Toshihiko, Kondo Masahiko, Godiego, Checkers.
それで私は考えます。「このお母さん、10代の頃にOOOの熱狂的なファンだったな」。
Then I think to myself that this mother was a great fan of the rock star when she was in her teens.
そういうお母さんたちに対面するチャンスがあれば、必ずメルアドのことを聞きます。
Having a chance to meet them face to face, I never forget to ask about their email address.
すると真っ赤な顔をして「あらいやだ。年がバレバレ」。They turn red and go like this. “Oh no. “Oh my goodness. Now you know how old I am.”

日本の学生はこじんまりしすぎています。それに「喝」をいれようと思い作成しました。
旧友の一人がラインを送ってきました。NHKのドラマ「それは経費で落ちません」を見たことあるか、との問い。One of my old friends sent me a LINE message, asking if I have ever watched the NHK TV series titled “It cannot be itemized as business expenses “
「あるよ、それがなにか？」と言いました。”Yes, I have. ” I, said. “So what?”
「あの番組のロケ、横浜ビルなんだってさ。」と興奮気味に答える友人H氏。He excitedly said that the location iused for that office comedy is YOKOHAMABUILDING.
「ええ、マジ？」と叫んだ私。 ”Really?” I shouted.
なんのことか分からない人のために説明しますと、横浜ビルはただの古い6階建てビル。Let me explain YOKOHAMA BUILDING for those who don’t know.It is just an old building that is six stories high.
戦後まもなく建てられ、私が勤めた日本通運株式会社横浜支店として長らく使われていたのです。Built shortly after the end of WW2, it was used as Nippon Express Yokohama Branch office for a very long time.
次の回、じっくりと観察しました。 So I closely watched the next episode.
たしかに私が働いていたころを思い出させる場面がいくつかあります。Indeed, there were a few scenes that I reminded me of my younger days as a logistics company employee.
テレビ画面をじかに撮ったこの写真を見てください。Take a look at the pictures I had taken directly from my TV screen.
だいぶ改修されているものの、昔のまま変わっていない部分が多数見受けられます。たとえば天井の構造、部屋の真ん中にある太い柱、ホテルみたいな入り口。Although the building was renovated to some extent, many things remain the same such as the structure of the ceiling, big pillars in the middle of the room, the hotel-like entrance hall .
ああ、なつかしい。まるで80年代に戻った気分。
Oh I feel like I’m back in the good old 80’s again.
横ビル当時の私です。 髪が真っ黒。（笑）
アルキメデスの大戦という映画を見てきました。I went to see a movie titled “The Great War of Archimedes”.
巨大な戦艦「大和」の建造計画をやめさせるために雇われた天才数学者、櫂直（かいただし）のフィクションストーリーです。It is a fiction story about a math genius (Tadashi Kai) who was hired to discourage a plan to build the gigantic battleship “YAMATO”.
1930年代、海軍の中には二つの派閥がありました。大和の建造を推進するグループとそうでないグループです。In 1930s, there were two opposing factions in the Navy – those who promoted the construction of Yamato and those who didn’t.
作るか否か、最終決定を下す会議が数週間後に迫っていました。It was only a few weeks before the final conference where they discussed which way to go – building Yamato or not.
直（ただし）の使命はそのたぐいまれなる数学知識を使って大和建造計画に失点がないかどうか突き止めることでした。たとえば建造費見積もりに誤りがないか、台風の際に構造上の欠陥がないか。Tadashi’s mission was to use his mathematical talent in detecting any failure in the Yamato project such as an error in the cost estimate or structural defects in case of a strong typhoon.
とっても面白く、2時間という時間が数分に感じられました。The story was so exciting that the two hours passed as if it were a few minutes.
主人公を演じたのは菅田将暉、かっこいいです。The actor who played the main character is Masaki Suda. He is cool.
映画を見たその夜、鈴木君(仮名）という高校生に受験英語を教えるレッスンがありました。That night, I had a class to teach a high school boy, Suzuki.
彼のカバンの中に本が・・・ I found this book in his bag.
ちょっと見ていいかい、彼に頼み込んでページをめくる。”Can I see it?” I asked him, picked it up and thumbed through pages.
急に映画のシーンのように解いてみたくなり、1問に挑戦。I suddenly felt like Tadashi Kai and tried to solve one of the math problems there.
解き終えて鈴木君に採点してもらったところWhen I finished it, I asked Suzuki if my answer was correct.
「野村先生、だめです。サインとコサインを取り違えています」But he said “I’m afraid Nomura Sensei. It’s wrong. You mistook sine for cosine.
げげっ、そんなミスをしてしまったのか・・・Oh No. How come I made such a big mistake.
でもいいや、ちょっとだけ映画の主人公になった気がした。鈴木君、手伝ってくれてありがとう。Anyway, thank you Suzuki for helping me feel like Tadashi Kai.

友人が新しい通信アプリを勧めてくれました。遠くに住んでいる生徒に英語レッスンするのにより役立つような。A friend of mine recommended me a new communication app that would better help me conduct my online English lessons with students who live far away from where I live.
その名前を言うのは勘弁してください。Please allow me not to tell you its name.

青いのが私、赤いのは生徒です。九州に住んでいます。Actually the blue letters and lines are mine and the red ones are hers. She lives in Kyushu.
何百マイルも離れているのに、まるで同じ部屋で作業しているかのよう。Though we are hundreds of miles away from each other, we can work together as if we are virtually in the same room .
こういうものが欲しかった！This is what I’ve been looking for.
遠距離のハンデを克服してくれること、間違いないでしょう。I’m sure it will help overcome the handicap of distance.
グーグルアナリティクスというものを利用しています。 私のホームページをどこの誰が見ているか、詳しく教えてくれる優れもの。
これを見ると、親戚も知り合いもいない府県の人が毎日のようにサイトを覗きに来ているのがわかっています。いったい何の目的で？
関心を持たれるのは悪い気がしませんが、ちょっと怖い気もします。

下にあるのはつい先日の記録。へんだなあ、新宿に知り合いなどいないはずなんだが？？
英語授業で名寄市立大学へ行った時のこと、席に着いた学生たちが何やら見ている。のぞいてみると
ほおお、あの人気番組「なんでも鑑定団」が名寄に出張鑑定に来るらしい。
果たしてどんなお宝が登場するやら、楽しみですね。
実はここだけの話、私にもひみつの（？）お宝を持っています。

これ、1970年に万国博覧会が大阪で開かれた時の記念ソノシートなのです。
当時、三菱グループが建てたパビリオン「三菱未来館」では「50年後の日本」をテーマに2020年、つまり来年の日本を予想していたのです。当時私は小学6年生。幸運なことに親に連れて行ってもらいました。でも残念ながら覚えているのは関西の夏の暑さのみ。あとはなーんにも記憶に残っていません。
いったいどんな予想がなされていたのでしょう、気になりますが今我が家にはレコードプレーヤーがなく、聴けません。
まあ、そのうちに聴いてみよっと。
会社勤めをしていると、イヤな上司に翻ろうされるものです。私もいろいろありました。 さて、欧米諸国の会社に秘書として働いた経験のある女性と会話しました。彼女の場合、上司に怒られてもネガティブにとらえず常に前向きに考えていたことがうかがえます。 えらいなあ！ 20代とは思えないこの考え方。それにひきかえこの俺は・・・
