一年で２３キロやせた男性の秘訣とは？How he lost 50 pounds in a year?

Many of us struggle for a weight on the daily basis. 

But for Ed Ugel, this battle of the bulge was so tough he decided to get serious about it.

He set off on a year-long quest to lose fifty pounds and regain his health, which he documented in his new book “I’m with fatty”.

 

And Ed Ugel is here to tell us more about it. Welcome Ed. Good to see you.

Thanks for having me. 

What motivated  you to start on this difficult journey in the first place?

That was born out of a health issue.

 

I thought that I was getting chubby around the middle  and chin. but it turns out that my wife taped me sleeping and my snoring was so bad that it turned out it was  sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea of course is when you stop breathing in your sleep, which is not a good thing.

 

And that’s related to weight.

 

That’s related to weight.

There’s not an absolute cause or effect. My doctor would put it that way. But once I put the weight on, the apnea showed up and when I lost the weight the apnea disappeared.

So at least for me, that was the motivating factor.

 

Now in this book you are very honest about the difficulties you went through in losing weight and coming to terms with the fact that you were a food addict.

Could you tell us about that?

You know I’m a lover of food like many people are. But I think when you wake up in the middle of the night and find yourself with a piece of steak in one hand and pint of Ben and Jerry’s in the other, you realize maybe you have gone past the point of no return. So for me it was really trying to find a way to isolate what was passion versus what was really an addiction. And that was something that I needed  to change through the rest of my life.

So how hard is it to find a healthy relationship to food for someone who obviously loves food so much.

Well I don’t think it’s as hard as it sounds. For me it’s about moderation and will. What I try to do is cook my way out of this problem.

When I’m in the kitchen and I’m cooking as much as I love to cook. And my food I think is delicious. It’s not really that unhealthy.

Just naturally I cook  a relatively healthy meal

It’s  when you are eating out of styrofoam boxes at a Chinese takeout that I really get myself in trouble, I’d like to think that’s really par for the course for a lot of the country .

Yeah, I think that’s a bit taken away from your book that if you learn to cook for yourself, you’ll ultimately eat a lot more healthy. Going out to eat is often the worst way we can eat.

Well I think it’s almost impossible to cook as badly and poorly as for yourself.

I remember, in the weeks after Katrina, you and I were sleeping in  rental cars at night. （ハリケーンカトリーナに襲われて数週間後のあの夜、

僕とあなたはレンタカーの中で寝ましたね）At the end of the day we would both talk about what we witnessed – whether it be the convention center, Charity Hospital.（そしてその日目撃した物事を２人で話し合ったものでした。集会所とか、チャリティ病院とか。）

What image sticks with you the most five years later?　（あれから５年、どんなイメージが今一番強く残っていますか？）

Well I think the one that’s most upsetting to me was, driving down the road, Jim Hill, and I , the producer.（はい、あの時もっとも腹立たしかったのは、ジム・ヒルと編集者の私が運転していて） And we suddenly saw right at the end of the street, underneath the traffic lights of this major city in the United States, New Orleans, a dead body right along the curve on the grass.（その道路の端で人間の死体を見たのです。このアメリカの主要都市ニューオーリンズの、道路脇の街灯の足元で、カーブに沿った草地のところで見たのです。） No one had picked them up. The national guard had not flown them away. The police  haven’t picked them up. The fire fighters haven’t taken her away. Her name was  Vera. That’s all we knew.　（誰もその遺体を引き取ろうとしませんでした。州兵も、警察も、消防も。彼女の名はベラ。分かっているのはそれだけでした）

Except that there was one man, a neighbor that was there, threw a blanket over the top of the body and then started burying her in dirt. （ただ一つ心の救いだったのは、近所の男性が彼女の遺体にタオルをかけ、土中に埋め始めたことでした。）He said that the nun would not ever forgive him if he did nothing like this. （このようなことしたら、修道女に許してもらえないだろう、と彼は語っていました） We had a chance also then, two days ago, to actually go back to that spot with the man who had done that kind of digging to bury that great woman. （おとといの日、同じ場所を訪れてかの男性と再会しました。）And now they created this shrine as a memorial to her for the rest of her life and hopefully it will stay there at that exact spot, where we saw that five years ago.（そこには亡くなった彼女を追悼するための祭壇が作られていました。５年前とまったく同じ場所に立てられた祭壇、いつまでもそこに残っていてほしいですね。

I know his tears haven’t been erased when you talked to him just this week. （その男性、きっと５年前から涙が途切れることはなかったでしょうね）　It’s still so emotional for the people of New Orleans. （ニューオーリンズの人にとって、まだまだ理性を失うような感情が残っていることでしょう。）But is there a noticeable change in the vibe five years later?（５年経って、人々の気持ちに目立った変化はありますか）

Well it really depends on who you talk to. （人によって様々ですね）Some people are very honest about it, very open about it.（正直にオープンに話してくれる人もいれば） There are ones really kind of not talking about it much any more. （もう話したくないという態度を取る人もいます）But I did get a chance to go back to the hospitals that you and I witnessed. （あの病院へ再度行ってみました）Most horrific things  we’ve seen.（我々が５年前にみた最も恐ろしい光景でした） I went back to the ones like that charity hospital where you and I remember five years ago going through these hospitals and in the beds there were people, patients who were actually dying.（ベッドの上には瀕死の人や患者がいました） They were not going to survive because there was no electricity in there. （停電状態だったので彼らに何もすることが出来なかったのです） There’s nothing much to do about it.（出来ることは何もありませんでした） So finally they went up to the roof and these paramedics were actually in there with helicopters taking them away. （最上階へいってみると、ヘリコプターで到着した医療チームが患者を運び出していました）And five years ago, I talked to one guy, who was one of the pilots that I saw. He was in tears then. （その時のパイロットと会ってみました。涙にくれていました）Had a chance yesterday to actually fly over the city again and he had the same exact feelings as he did back then. （昨日現地を訪れた際、５年前と同じ心境になったと語っていました。）You know we have seen so many tears; people really have actually reacted the same way as they had before, It’s been a big challenge.（このように、まだ多くの人々が当時と同じ反応を見せ、涙を見せます。大きな試練でした。）

３３名全員生存!!!　Trapped Chilean miners send note saying they are alive!

A riveting human drama thousands of feet below the earth. （地下数千フィートのところでものすごい人間ドラマが起きています）Thirty-three Chilean miners facing months of life now at a tiny cavern. （小さな洞窟で、何か月も暮らすことになる33名のチリの鉱夫たち）The mine collapsed two and a half weeks ago they sent up a scribbled message XXXXX　（2週間と少し前にこの鉱山は崩落しました。そして中に居た彼らが地上に向け手書きのメッセージを送ってきたのです。）

The court official I spoke with would not make any comment on whether　this matter will be  taken any further. George?（法廷でうその証言をした場合、最高で２年の懲役を科されます。今のところはただ女優がモデルに言っただけの言葉とみなされているだけです。　今後偽証としてみなされるのか？法廷関係者と話しましたが、コメントはもらえませんでした。）

GOOGLE　WAVEに関するCNNの記事

Google this week abandoned “Wave,” its much-hyped social collaboration tool. Wave was perhaps the prototypical Google product: Technically advanced, incredibly ambitious and near-impossible to use.
 
グーグルは今週、大々的に宣伝してきた社会的なコラボツールの「ウエーブ」を断念した。
「ウエーブ」はおそらく同社の先駆者的な製品であった。　技術的に高度で、驚くほど野心に満ち溢れ、しかしほとんど使えない。
 

Its demise is the canary in the coal mine for Google’s social networking plans: Facebook is destined to build the Web’s next wave, as Google continues to tread water.　グーグル社の社会ネットワーキング計画にとり、ウエーブの終焉は鉱山のカナリアそのものである。　ウエブの次世代を築く運命にあるのはFACEBOOKだ、というのもグーグル社が努力の割には成果を見ていないからだ。

Wave was a testament to Google’s technical prowess: A real-time communication platform that combined elements of instant messaging, e-mail and collaboration software. 「ウエーブ」はグーグル社技術が大胆な行動に出たことを裏付ける証しだった。IMや電子メール、コラボソフトの各要素を組み合わせたリアルタイムの通信環境ちなるはずだったからだ。

The only problem: With its many dials and switches, mastering Wave was the web equivalent of programming your VCR.

唯一の問題点それは、ダイヤルやスイッチがたくさんあるのにもかかわらず、「ウエーブ」をマスターして得られることはたかが知れている。ビデオ録画をウエブ上でやる程度のことでしかないのである。

Few users took the time to understand the product, and mainstream adoption proved unattainable.

時間をかけてこの製品（ウエーブ）を理解しようとするユーザーはほとんどいなかった。大衆が利用するようなものには到底なれないことが証明されたわけだ。

It’s the same fate that awaited Google’s other recent foray into the social realm: Google Buzz. （グーグル社はこのほかにもソーシャルネットワーク領域への進出を図ったことがあった。「グーグルバズ」がそれだ。　「ウエーブ」は「グーグルバズ」と同じ運命をたどることとなった。　This Twitter-like service seemed smart in theory, but Google’s inability to build simple and compelling social tools meant the service was perceived as a nuisance rather than a breakthrough.このツイッターに似たサービスは、理論上は有能に見えた。　だがグーグル社がこれを分かりやすくて心をつかむようなツールに出来なかった。そのためこのサービスは、飛躍的な前進という見方をされずに迷惑なものとしての印象を持たれてしまった。

All of which must have Mark Zuckerberg rubbing his hands together in glee. これらの事で、Facebook創始者マークザッカーバーグ氏は大いに喜んでいることだろう。

While Google is one of the few companies large enough to build a significant social network, Google Wave’s demise is further proof that these efforts (rumored to be called “Google Me“) are destined to fail.　グーグルは重要なソーシャルネットワークを構築するできる数少ない会社の一社であるけれども、　「ウエーブ」の終焉はかれらの努力（グーグルミーと呼ばれているそうだ）が失敗する運命にあることをさらに示す証拠となった。

Like Wave, Google Me will likely be a work of technical wizardry too advanced for us mere mortals to understand.　ウエーブ同様、グーグルミーも、我々素人には難しすぎて理解できないハイテク製品になるだろう。

Google’s failure to develop engaging social services is more disastrous than it might seem at first.ソーシャルネットワークへのサービス展開にグーグル社が失敗したことは、当初そう思えた時よりもいっそう壊滅的になっている。

Social networking is no longer just a time-waster for young people — it now reaches all demographics and encompasses personalized search, highly targeted advertising and the red-hot social gaming trend.　（ソーシャルネットワークはもはや若い人のヒマつぶしではなく、すべての年齢層に行き渡り、特定個人検索や高度に的を絞った宣伝広告、熱狂的な社会ゲームの傾向をすべて網羅したものとなっている。）

As Facebook builds a user base of more than 500 million people, it also stockpiles the personal information required to provide more comprehensive ad targeting — and a more personalized search engine — than Google could ever hope to engineer through algorithms alone.

フェースブックは５億人を超えるユーザーの基盤を築き、多くの個人情報を蓄えている。その個人情報は、グーグルが算法だけで開発しうるものより包括的な宣伝広告や特定個人検索エンジンを提供するのに必要なものとなる。　

Google isn’t unaware of this predicament: The company is throwing its resources behind a plan to escape its social networking slump. But short of a miracle — an acquisition of Facebook nemesis Twitter, perhaps — Google won’t become a socialite anytime soon.

グーグル社はこの苦境を知らないわけではない。　ソ－シャルネットワーク事業の不振から脱却するための計画を掲げる裏で資産の売却をおこなっている。

ネットいじめにユーチューブで対抗する１１歳の少女 11-year-old girl fights online bullying

Florida police are now investigating the case of extreme bullying online.（フロリダ警察では、ネットによる極端ないじめが行われているとして調べています）

It all began after an eleven year old girl posted  videos on You Tube.（事の発端は１１歳の女子がユーチューブにビデオを投稿したことに始まります）

Her family says they sparked a nightmare, pranks, and death threats.（そのビデオが悪夢やいたずら、そして殺人の脅迫まで引き起こしてしまったと家族が語っています）

Jessi Slaughter’s jaw-dropping You Tube  videos are so controversial .（彼女（ジェシースローター）がYou　Tubeに投稿したビデオの内容は、唖然とするような内容で、議論をかもしだしました）　I’ll pop a glock in your mouth and make a brain slushy（あんたの口に鉄琴を突っ込んで脳みそをぐちゃぐちゃにしてやる） They’ve made her the victim of death threat at just 11 years old.（１１歳という年齢で殺人脅迫を受けるはめになってしまいました）

You guys have ruined my life.（あんたたちのせいで私の人生はめちゃめちゃにされた）

No. I never thought  we’ve got to this point.　（ここまで来るとは思っていませんでした）

Now speaking only to GMA with her parenrts Gene and Diane, it’s the first time the seventh grader has been out in public since her videos ignited a firestorm.

I’ll put some　xxx　 in a bar.（意味不明） Why so much profanity. in the videos?　（なぜビデオを使って悪口を言うの） It’s just I had no words running through my mind. It was all done live and just a way for me to get out my anger.　（考えていっているのではなく、ぶっつけ本番で話していたのです。怒りを吹き飛ばすにはこの方法しかなかったので）

Slaughter thought she’d turn her webcam into a weapon in retaliation of  online postings about her alleged sexual history.（性の遍歴をあれこれとネットに書かれたので、その復讐に燃えた彼女はウエブカメラを武器に変えたのでした。）If you guys consider and forget my  OOOOO in me, can you guess it’s the actual XOXOXOXO,  cause I’m not XOXOXOX.　（意味不明。）

Now helping matters, her father joined in with   a tirade of his own.　（彼女の父親も、自分の怒りを抑えるためビデオに加わってきました。）”This is XXXX. Her father. You bunch of lying no-good punks..（俺はこの子の父親だ。おまえらはみんな嘘つきの馬鹿野郎だ。）

And I know who it’s coming from, because I back traced it.”（逆探知して、おまえらの居場所はすでに突き止めてあるんだぞ） As a father , I was just trying to support  my daughter and get people to stop hating.　（父親として娘を支え、いじめをやめさせようとしただけです。）

Their retaliation , now  seen by many more than million viewers only made the taunting worse, taking the cyber bullying to a whole new level.(でもその復讐は、百万人以上の人々の目にとまり,　口喧嘩をより悪質なものにさせ、ネットいじめを新しい段階へともたらすはめになりました。）

When it first started, we were very afraid.（始めた時はとても心配でした）

I didn’t ever realize we were getting a lot of death threats. (殺すという脅迫がこんなに多く来るとは思ってもみませんでした）

Online people are occasionally molesting my daughter.　（ネット上の人々はしばしば娘に卑猥な言葉を浴びせます） Slaughter said she was sent to a mental health facility after the authority believed she might be suicidal.（スローターさんに自殺の恐れがあるとして、当局が彼女を精神科施設へ送ったことがあったそうです）　She said she isn’t. But we can see how  a tween could be pushed over the edge.（自殺などしないと彼女は言いますが、十代前半の子どもなら崖っぷちへ追い込まれることはありえます。）

I think that’s completely wrong that people would taunt someone to some degree  that they will kill themselves over it.（自殺をしたくなるほどにまで人をいじめて追い込むのは絶対に間違っていると思います）    And that’s actually completely wrong whoever is doing it should be blocked away for a ｖery long time of threat.（こういった行為は絶対に間違っています。長い期間隔離しておくべきです） Now Jessi slaughter, which is actually her screen name, is about to enter a counseling.　（ジェシースローターは、（スクリーン上の仮名）カウンセリングを受ける予定になっています。

But these XXXX videos may just end up hunting her forever.（しかしこれらのビデオは、ただ彼女を追い詰めていくだけです）
