本日の勉強メニュー

リーディング（読解）の部では、食べ残しの無駄を無くすために日本国内でドギ－バッグの普及展開をはかるＮＰＯ団体についてのJAPAN　TIMES記事を取り上げました。　我が国だけで無駄に捨てられる食物は、世界中の援助用食糧とほぼ同じ量である、という内容には一同「うーん」と考えさせられた様子でした。原文は以下の通り。　

Can doggy bags save the world?

In Japan every year, leftovers are roughly the same as the world’s annual total of food aid. And then there’s the waste-disposal crisis . . .

It can be a bit embarrassing at a restaurant to say that you’d like to take your leftovers away with you. That’s probably why people the world over often ask for the food to be put in a “doggy bag,” whether or not they have a hungry pooch waiting at home. The cute expression also helps them to avoid looking mean.

Eco packs: Asako Hirai of the Doggy Bag Committee displays various reusable doggy bags made of plastic that even allow diners to take liquid leftovers home.

Remarkably, though, the Japanese language never came up with an equivalent to describe a container for leftover food — and without there being a word for something, how can it exist?

That’s why Tokyo-based nonprofit organization Doggy Bag Committee (DBC) has set out to popularize the English term. By encouraging diners in Japan to take their leftovers home, DBC plans to try and reduce the nation’s annual 5-to-9 million-ton mountain of food left on people’s plates or discarded by shops after its sell-by date.

It doesn’t matter much to me. My husband has already retired. My kid lives in Sapporo.

(私の場合亭主は引退しているし、子供は札幌在住なので、影響ありません）

Bさんの意見

I  DO mind it.  I’ve got two kids. One lives  in Tokyo, and another one in Sendai.  I suspect we’ll end up facing some inconvenience  setting up a family get-together.

(困りますね。私には子供が二人いて、一人は東京、もう一人は仙台にすんでいます。　家族全員で集まるのに不都合が生じるだけなんじゃないかという気がします）

Cさんの意見

It may be worth a try although the proposal enriches the tourism industry only.   After all we are in an deep and long recession. Something must be done to stimulate the ailing economy. 観光業界を潤すだけだろうけれど、やってみる価値はあるのではないだろうか？つまるところ日本は深くて長い不況にあり、経済を刺激するために何かしなくては。

タイガーウッズの記者会見の模様を皆で聞き取り訓練しました。（浮気とか不倫とか、題材として不適切だったかな）

For all that I have done, I am so sorry.

私がやったすべてのことに対し、申し訳なく思います。

I have a lot to atone for, but there is one issue that I really want to discuss.

償うべきことはたくさんありますが、でも是非話しておきたいことがあります。

Some people have speculated that ELIN somehow hurt or attacked me on Thanksgiving night. 感謝祭の日の夜に、妻エリンが私を殴ったとか、襲いかかったとか推測する人がいます。

It angers me that people would fabricate a story like that.人々がそういう話をでっちあげるのは腹が立ちます。

ELIN never hit me that night or any other night.エリンはいつだって私をたたいたことはありません。

There has never been an episode of domestic violence in our marriage, ever.

私たちの結婚生活で、家庭内暴力が起きたことは一度だってありません。

ELIN has shown enormous grace and poise throughout this ordeal.

このつらく厳しい時期にも、彼女は品位と冷静さを大いに見せてくれました。

ELIN deserves praise, not blame.エリンは非難ではなく称賛に値します。

The issue involved here was my repeated irresponsible behavior.

ここで問題となるのは私が繰り返してきた無責任な行動なのです。

I was unfaithful, I had affairs, I cheated.　私は不誠実でした。不倫をしました。浮気をしました。

What I did is not acceptable. 私がやったことは許されることではありません。

A)   Yes. I feel sorry for the victims and their families.

B)   Do you know what the cause was?  It’s hard to believe.

A)   I don’t know.　 What was that?

B)   It’s a laundry that caught fire over the stove.

A)   Oh my god. It’s an accident that could have been prevented.

ジャパンタイムズの記事を和訳。　内容は鳩山邦夫氏の自民党脱退、および水俣病未認定患者に対し熊本地裁が提示した和解案。

montoさん、コメントありがとうございます。
両者は「原爆投下は必要だったか？」を論議しています。
限られた時間内で討論するのですから、相手のこまごました論点にすべて触れるよりも、キーポイントだけに絞って論じる方が効果的だったのではないでしょうか？
また、日本軍の戦意の有無と、戦争終結に対する取り組みを表裏一体と見なすのは妥当でない気がします。

細かいことはさておき、根幹となる部分だけ着目しましょう。

古森氏の考え：「戦意をなくした日本に原爆は不要だった」
米人B：「日本に戦意はまだ残っていた。従って投下はやむを得なかった」
米人A：（このテープに録音された部分に限って言えば、自分の意見を言っていない。）戦後日本の反省度の低さにホコ先を向けて糾弾することにより、「そんな日本に非難されるいわれはない」という意見に終始している。（ソ連に対する優位性のくだりは、他人の意見の引用であって、Aさん自身のものではありません）

こう見ていくと、Aさんはもっと自分の意見を言うべきですよね、戦意にせよ対ソ優位性にせよ。　「はぐらかし」だけではdebateとは呼べないですよ。　ホント

お疲れ様でした。

これだけの量のディクテーションとその訳を、よくやり抜きましたね。恐れ入ります。

このディスカッションの論理が私には噛み合っていない気がするのですが、私の理解力がないからなのでしょうか？それとも、実際、噛み合っていないのでしょうか？

米A：　原爆投下前に勝敗は決まっており、投下した本当の理由はソビエトに対し政治的優位性を見せておきたかったから。

古森：ソ連が中国日本領に進出してきた8月9日には2回目の原爆が落とされた。これは、日本の敗戦を意味する。

この時点で、議論はかみ合っていない気がする。その後も数回、噛み合わない論議が続くような…頭が混乱してきました。

なんにせよ、この仕事の見事さは賞賛に値します。

I’d also  add that US could have just demonstrated the awesome power of the newly developed weapon, test explosion or something.
付け加えますが、（もし米国の目的がソ連を敬遠することにあったのなら）この恐ろしい新型爆弾を（居住地に落とさず）どこかで爆破実験してその模様を世界中に知らしめるだけで充分だったのではないでしょうか？

And the Japanese tend to downplay the rate of men killing. There are various other episodes that Japanese are not killing in textbooks students learn.  And you people, your country have not come to grasp with what you did in the war and not teaching school children what happened?
ちょっとまった、ちょっとまった。それはずいぶん偏ったものの言い方ですね。ここアメリカでは、日本が原爆投下に対して我々を非難するなど厚かましい、といった感情がありますよ。　それに日本は殺戮してきた人間の数を実際より少なくさせようとしたり、 生徒が使う教科書に「日本は人を殺していない」と書かせようとするエピソードが他にも多々ある。　日本は、戦争で行ってきた事実をしっかり把握してこなかっただけでなく、子供たちにも伝えようとしない。そういうところがあるんですよ、人民も、国家も。

It’s an assertion that Japanese have not come to grasp with the sense of our guilt. I really take issues with that. because I don’t remember how many times Japanese prime ministers and other political leaders really showed the act of apology. In addition to this, a tremendous amount of reparation was paid to all those countries.　In addition, the Tokyo War Crime Trials, I don’t know two thousand people were executed, and all that.  In addition to this, bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  So the issue of Japanese textbooks – it’s really taken out of context – made sort of a political issue by Korean and Chinese.
日本が罪の意識を持っていなかったとはずいぶんなご意見ですね。　それについては言わせてもらいますよ。　というのも今まで日本の総理大臣や政界首脳が何度謝罪の行動をとってきたか、その数ははかり知れません。　それに当事国に対しては多額の賠償金を支払っています。　また東京軍事裁判では、２千人もの戦犯が処刑されている。　（広島、長崎で受けた大きな被害を勘定に入れず）これだけのことをやらされてきたのです。
また教科書に関する意見は、韓国や中国によって政治問題化されてきた論調ですが、主旨が理解されていないです。

We have a number of documents that we didn’t have a few years ago. For instance, we’ve found the President Truman’s diary recently, and his letter to his wife, top intelligent reports – that we broke the Japanese code and we knew that they were attempting to surrender.
It was still three months before the preliminary landing. And the consensus of the real experts, people who spent all of their time studying this is that the bomb was unnecessary. Most notable  leaders at the very top in the World War Two – General Eisenhower for instance, the head of Air force , Henry Arnold. All agreed that the bomb was unnecessary.

Why did Truman drop it then?
それではなぜトルーマン大統領は投下させたのですか？

Well, there’s a debate. Many people say he did it for political reasons.  (聴き取り不能部分あり）
Many people now see that one of the factors was to impress the Russians, who were about to enter the war. Indeed they were before they got into North China, Manchuria, to spread influence. political reasons, not military reasons.
And one of the big reasons being criticized – Eisenhower was a major critic. He said that a lot of people lost their lives, mostly  civilians – in a situation probably where it’s not military necessity.
さあここを討論しましょう。　トルーマンは政治的理由で原爆を投下したと多くの人が言っています。　要因の一つは、当時参戦しようとしていたソ連を敬遠すること。　確かにソ連軍はまさに中国北部、満州地域へ入り込んで、その影響力拡大を図ろうとする目前でした。　つまり政治的理由であり、軍事的理由ではないのです。この大きな理由は、主にアイゼンハワー氏によって批判されました。　この原爆により多くの人命が失われ、そのほとんどが民間人だった、軍事的に必要性のない状況下で行われた殺りくだったと。

There’s also an attempt by Japanese political leadership to put in a peace feeler, mostly through the Soviet Union, of course without knowing that Soviet had already agreed to take part in the war. Soviet’s invasion into Japanese occupied territory of China got underway on the ninth of August, which , in Japan, it is exactly the date the second bomb was dropped. All of the indication is that Japan had come to realize that there was no way this country could continue the war.
日本では、政府首脳が主にソ連を通じて和平交渉を試みていました。　まさかソ連がそのときすでに参戦に合意していたなどまったく知らずに。
中国における日本軍占領地域にソ連軍が侵入したのが８月９日、この日はまさに２発目の原爆が落とされた日であります。これら事実が意味することは、日本はすでに戦争の継続が不可能であることを実感していたということです。

Mr.Komori, isn’t there a little revisionism in this view after having seen the tenacity that the Japanese displayed , island by island, as the U.S. led with its marine marched across, trying to get to Japan.  All of a sudden, you are saying that tenacity would have disappeared, and they would have holded their hand and ended the war?
古森さん、あなた事実を塗り替えてはいませんか。　日本軍はですね、米海軍が日本本土に到達するまで、一つ一つの島々で激しく抵抗をみせたのですよ。　それなのにあなたは、日本軍が突然（原爆を落とさなくても）戦意を失い、両手を上げて降参するつもりだったと言っている。
