Trapped Chilean miners send note saying they are alive!

A riveting human drama thousands of feet below the earth. (地下数千フィートのところでものすごい人間ドラマが起きています)Thirty-three Chilean miners facing months of life now at a tiny cavern. (小さな洞窟で、何か月も暮らすことになる33名のチリの鉱夫たち)The mine collapsed two and a half weeks ago they sent up a scribbled message XXXXX (2週間と少し前にこの鉱山は崩落しました。

And now the incredible struggle began to get them food, water, and hope for the weeks of rescue may require.(信じられない戦いが始まりました。 Jeffrey  Kofman is in Chile tonight.

This video taken by an underground probe confirmed the news. All thirty-three men are alive. you can see one of them here. The men there journeyed down seven miles of zigzagging tunnel when a section of the copper mine collapsed. After two weeks of seven failed attempts, yesterday rescuers drilled a six inch wide hole two thousand two hundred and fifty-eight feet down. When they heard banging, they sent down a tiny camera.(やがて大きな轟音が聞こえたところで、彼らは小さなカメラを落下させました。)

When it came back to a surface, there was a note from the  eldest of the miners,63-year-old Mario Gomez.(それを頂上に戻してみたら、小さな紙切れが一緒に付いてきたのです。

“I want to tell everyone that I’m good”, he wrote to his wife. “And we’ll surely come out OK.” The news was met with euphoria by anxious families and anxious nation.(全員生存のニュースに家族も国民も喜びました。)

“We are happy”, says Katarine Abalone, whose brother is trapped underground, “this is what we’ve been waiting seventeen days to  hear”. The thirty-three men are surviving under grueling conditions in a six hundred square foot refuge about the size of a hotel room.(この33名の鉱夫は55平方メートル、およそホテルの一室と同じ程度の広さの場所で生き延びています。 The temperature ninety-five degrees with a humidity at ninety-five percent.  (摂氏35度、湿度95%They have some electricity from a truck engine for light.(近くにあったトラックのエンジンから電気を取り、照明として使っているようです) They used a backhoe to dig into the dirt floor of the mine to find drinking water.

People may say this is not successful because these men are trapped. (鉱夫が閉じ込められたのだから、この鉱山計画は失敗だった、と言うかもしれませんが)I say this is incredibly successful because these men  survived and they’re going to be able to survive.(私はむしろ成功だったと思っている。

Down the six-inch shaft, rescuers are now lowering, the saltwater, gel tablets and medicine to help nurse the men back from the brink of starvation. It’s believed that they’ve been living off a 48-hour supply of food. (彼らは少なく見積もっても48時間は食糧が無い状態だったとみられています)To rescue the trapped men, they will dig a wider 27 inch bore hole.(人間を救出するため68センチの穴をドリルで開ける用意があるそうです) The men will be raised up one at a time, but two are reportedly obese and it’s not clear how they will fit.(そうすれば、中の人間を一気に持ち上げて地表まで運ぶことになります。 All this could take a month but it may take until Christmas. (このすべての作業には一か月、いやクリスマス頃までかかるかもしれません) Mario Gomez seemed to sense that in the note he scrolled to his wife ” patience and faith”, he wrote,  god is great and the help of my god is going to make it possible to leave this mine alive. We know the men have enough air  to breathe and we now know they have enough  food to eat. (彼らには十分な水と充分な食料が届いたことが明らかになりました) What is not clear is whether they know how long it may take to rescue them. Diane?

Did she really not know it was a gift of diamonds from war crimes-indicted?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orNXcu1jRaE

Mia farrow is still on the sand being cross examined. (ミアファローは依然として厳しい尋問を受け、身動きが取れない状況です)Naomi Campbell, as you  mentioned,  testified last week.(ナオミキャンベルが先週証言台に立ちました。)

Now all this hinges on exactly what was said over a star-studded breakfast table at Nelson Mandela’s House thirteen years ago.(13

Listen very carefully.(注意して聞きましょう。)

Under oath,  the movie star and super model agreed  that Campbell received an extraordinary gift.((裁判所で)宣誓した映画俳優とスーパーモデルは、キャンベルが何か特殊な贈り物をもらったという点では一致していました)

” I opened my door. And two men were there and gave me a pouch and said it’s a gift for you. And there were very small dirty looking stones.”(ドアを開けたらそこに2人の男が立っていて、袋を手渡され「あなたに贈りものです」と言われました。

“They had given her a huge diamond.”

A crucial question: was this gift from Charles Taylor, charged with arming vicious rebels in return for black  diamond.

“And these two men. Did you know who they were?”

NO. I’m afraid not”(いいえ知りません)

And she said  they had been sent by Charles Taylor.”

At breakfast, I told Miss Farrow and Miss White what had happened.  And one of the two said that’s obviously Charles Taylor. And I just said I guess it was.”

Did you tell Naomi Campbell that the diamond or diamonds came from Charles Taylor?”(あなたはナオミキャンベルに、そのダイヤはチャールズテイラーから贈られたものだと言いましたか?)

Absolutely not. Naomi Campbell said they came from Charles Taylor.(いいえ違います。

“Who will the court believe, actress with admittedly touchy memory or volatile supermodel who just a few months ago lied outright to ABC news?

“You received  a diamond from Charles Taylor.” (あなたはチャールズテイラー氏からダイヤをもらいましたね?)”I didn’t receive a diamond and I’m not gonna speak about that. Thank you so much.

 “We are not —–.”

Now anyone accused of lying to this court can be fined or given up to two years in jail. Right now it is just the actress’s word against the model’s. The court official I spoke with would not make any comment on whether this matter will be  taken any further.

That makes sense. I am sure this is not the last word from Naomi Campbell whether she likes it or not.

Divers find 230-year old champagne in Baltic wreck

A bit of bubbly for divers in finland enjoying a sunken treasure that hasn’t seen the light of day in centuries.(何世紀もの間海に沈んだままだった宝物を見つけ、フィンランドの潜水士が騒いでいます)The divers exploring a ship wreck in the baltic sea found 30 bottles of champagne believed to HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE 1780s, before the French revolution. They popped the cork on one bottle and said it still tastes fantastic.(1本のコルクを開けたところ、味は上々だったとか) If the date is confirmed it would be the oldest drinkable champagne in the world. (製造日付が確認されれば世界で一番古いシャンペンとなるでしょう)Each bottle could fetch about $70,000 at auction.

Angry Mcnugget Fan Punched Drive-through Window

Here is more evidence that while venting your rage might feel good, it just doesn’t pay.(腹いせに怒りをぶちまけても割に合わないという証拠がもうひとつここに出てきました)Take a look at what happened when an Ohio woman was denied her dose of Morning Mcnuggets.(チキンナジェットを断られたオハイオの女性。その後何が起こったか見てみましょう) At the drive-up window she was told that nuggets were not on the breakfast menu.(ドライブスルーでの窓で、彼女は朝のメニューにナジェットはないと言われました) And that is when she went bizarre. (その時彼女は豹変し) You can see her there swinging at the employee, eventually breaking the entire drive-through window.(従業員に襲いかかって窓を割ったのです)

That bit of rage cost her sixty days in jail and fifteen hundred dollars in damages.(これだけのことで、懲役60日と損害賠償1500ドルが科せられました)

Google this week abandoned “Wave,” its much-hyped social collaboration tool. Wave was perhaps the prototypical Google product: Technically advanced, incredibly ambitious and near-impossible to use.

Its demise is the canary in the coal mine for Google’s social networking plans: Facebook is destined to build the Web’s next wave, as Google continues to tread water.

Wave was a testament to Google’s technical prowess: A real-time communication platform that combined elements of instant messaging, e-mail and collaboration software.

The only problem: With its many dials and switches, mastering Wave was the web equivalent of programming your VCR.

Few users took the time to understand the product, and mainstream adoption proved unattainable.

It’s the same fate that awaited Google’s other recent foray into the social realm: Google Buzz. This Twitter-like service seemed smart in theory, but Google’s inability to build simple and compelling social tools meant the service was perceived as a nuisance rather than a breakthrough.

All of which must have Mark Zuckerberg rubbing his hands together in glee.

While Google is one of the few companies large enough to build a significant social network, Google Wave’s demise is further proof that these efforts (rumored to be called “Google Me“) are destined to fail.

Like Wave, Google Me will likely be a work of technical wizardry too advanced for us mere mortals to understand.

Google’s failure to develop engaging social services is more disastrous than it might seem at first.

Social networking is no longer just a time-waster for young people — it now reaches all demographics and encompasses personalized search, highly targeted advertising and the red-hot social gaming trend.

As Facebook builds a user base of more than 500 million people, it also stockpiles the personal information required to provide more comprehensive ad targeting — and a more personalized search engine — than Google could ever hope to engineer through algorithms alone.

Google isn’t unaware of this predicament: The company is throwing its resources behind a plan to escape its social networking slump. But short of a miracle — an acquisition of Facebook nemesis Twitter, perhaps — Google won’t become a socialite anytime soon.

11-year-old girl fights online bullying

Florida police are now investigating the case of extreme bullying online.(フロリダ警察では、ネットによる極端ないじめが行われているとして調べています)

It all began after an eleven year old girl posted  videos on You Tube.(事の発端は11歳の女子がユーチューブにビデオを投稿したことに始まります)

Her family says they sparked a nightmare, pranks, and death threats.(そのビデオが悪夢やいたずら、そして殺人の脅迫まで引き起こしてしまったと家族が語っています)

Police are now looking into what they say could amount to a cyber stalking case.(警察では、この事件をサイバーストーカー事件として調査をすすめています)

Andrea Canning spoke with the family in a GMA exclusive.(Good Morning America

Jessi Slaughter’s jaw-dropping You Tube  videos are so controversial .(彼女(ジェシースローター)がYou Tubeに投稿したビデオの内容は、唖然とするような内容で、議論をかもしだしました) I’ll pop a glock in your mouth and make a brain slushy(あんたの口に鉄琴を突っ込んで脳みそをぐちゃぐちゃにしてやる) They’ve made her the victim of death threat at just 11 years old.(11歳という年齢で殺人脅迫を受けるはめになってしまいました)

You guys have ruined my life.(あんたたちのせいで私の人生はめちゃめちゃにされた)

No. I never thought  we’ve got to this point.

Now speaking only to GMA with her parenrts Gene and Diane, it’s the first time the seventh grader has been out in public since her videos ignited a firestorm.

I’ll put some xxx in a bar.(意味不明) Why so much profanity. in the videos? (なぜビデオを使って悪口を言うの) It’s just I had no words running through my mind. It was all done live and just a way for me to get out my anger.

Slaughter thought she’d turn her webcam into a weapon in retaliation of  online postings about her alleged sexual history.(性の遍歴をあれこれとネットに書かれたので、その復讐に燃えた彼女はウエブカメラを武器に変えたのでした。)If you guys consider and forget my  OOOOO in me, can you guess it’s the actual XOXOXOXO,  cause I’m not XOXOXOX.

Now helping matters, her father joined in with   a tirade of his own. This is XXXX. Her father. You bunch of lying no-good punks..(俺はこの子の父親だ。

And I know who it’s coming from, because I back traced it.”(逆探知して、おまえらの居場所はすでに突き止めてあるんだぞ) As a father , I was just trying to support  my daughter and get people to stop hating.

Their retaliation , now  seen by many more than million viewers only made the taunting worse, taking the cyber bullying to a whole new level.(でもその復讐は、百万人以上の人々の目にとまり, 口喧嘩をより悪質なものにさせ、ネットいじめを新しい段階へともたらすはめになりました。)

When it first started, we were very afraid.(始めた時はとても心配でした)

I didn’t ever realize we were getting a lot of death threats.

Online people are occasionally molesting my daughter. (ネット上の人々はしばしば娘に卑猥な言葉を浴びせます) Slaughter said she was sent to a mental health facility after the authority believed she might be suicidal.(スローターさんに自殺の恐れがあるとして、当局が彼女を精神科施設へ送ったことがあったそうです) She said she isn’t. But we can see how  a tween could be pushed over the edge.(自殺などしないと彼女は言いますが、十代前半の子どもなら崖っぷちへ追い込まれることはありえます。)

I think that’s completely wrong that people would taunt someone to some degree  that they will kill themselves over it.(自殺をしたくなるほどにまで人をいじめて追い込むのは絶対に間違っていると思います)    And that’s actually completely wrong whoever is doing it should be blocked away for a very long time of threat.(こういった行為は絶対に間違っています。長い期間隔離しておくべきです) Now Jessi slaughter, which is actually her screen name, is about to enter a counseling.

But these XXXX videos may just end up hunting her forever.(しかしこれらのビデオは、ただ彼女を追い詰めていくだけです)

For good morning America, Andrea Canning, ABC news, Funcoast Florida.(フロリダ州ファンコーストからアンドレーキャニングがお伝えしました)

Gulf coast fisheries will be reopened soon. But…

As we told you last night, the fishing waters of the Gulf are re-opening , the surface oil  fading.(昨日お伝えしたとおり、メキシコ湾の海面上の油が消えかかっているので、漁場が再開されることになりました。) But is that oil in the creature underneath?(しかしその油は、水面下にいる生物の体内にはいっているのではないでしょうか?) Jeffrey Kofman went to find out.(ジェフリーコフマンが調べに行きました)

This is what it looked like in the Gulf a few weeks ago, when we reported finding huge plumes of oil hidden below the surface.

But in the two weeks since the leaking well was capped, government and independent scientists have done extensive testing in the deep sea. It is not what they expected.

We’re finding the hydrocarbons around the well, but as we move  away from the well, they move almost to background traces in the water column.(油井の周りには炭化水素がありますが、油井から離れると・・・)

We survey scientists across the Gulf Coast and many pointed to the same answer. (メキシコ湾にいる科学者に対して調べたところ、多くが同じ答えを指摘しました)These deep sea microbes called  cycrophiles. (それはサイクロファイルと呼ばれる深海の微生物です) They occur naturally  in the waters of Gulf and when there is oil, they multiply to eat it. (メキシコ湾に自然に現れて、油があると繁殖してその油を食べるのです)When a large amount of oil comes into the environment, then they quickly muster if you will.  And they can sometimes grow into a thousand fold.(大量の油が入ってきた場合は急速に集まり、一千倍の大きさに変身することもあります。)

They are also not finding the oil in sea food. (海産物からは油は発見されていません)This independent lab has been  testing fish from Louisiana coast, since the disaster began. (この独立研究所では、被害発生の時からルイジアナ沿岸の魚をテストしてきました)The state has tested fifteen thousand sea food samples. (州ではすでに15千もの見本を調べてきました)Not a single one has shown elevated levels of oil contaminants.(油により汚染の度合いが高まったものはひとつもありません)

 What are you finding?

We are not finding very much at all. But that does not mean all is well in the ocean.

Scientists worry about the  littlest creatures like these blue crab larvae.(一方、科学者たちは小さな生物、たとえなこのカニの幼虫に心配を寄せています)

Those microscopic orange drops, a fraction of a millimeter have never been seen before.(この小さなオレンジ色の粒は、1ミリにも満たない大きさではありますが、以前はまったく見られませんでした) Scientists worry that is dispersed oil from the spill. It is so small that tests will take time.(海中で漏れた油の一部だろうと科学者は見ていますが余りに小さいため調べるのに時間がかかります)

We just don’t know enough right now to say whether there’s been large effects or not.(現時点では情報量が足りない為、大きな影響があるのかどうかわかりません)

Now this cold storage tells the story  of the spill’s impact on the Louisiana fishing industry.(ここの冷凍倉庫は、原油漏れ事故がルイジアナの漁業界に与えた衝撃を物語ってくれます。) It’s normally filled to the rafters there.(通常ですと倉庫は(カニで)一杯になり、あの梁のところまでとどくのですが) Right now, they are in such short supply they’re having to bring in  Venezualan crab to fill orders.(今は供給が少ないため、注文をまかなうのにベネズエラからカニを輸入している状態です)

But that is going to change quickly. Today, Mississippi opened most of its fisheries.Fisheries here in Louisiana east to the Mississippi also open today.(しかしこんな状況もあとわずか。 We are told within two weeks most of Louisiana’s fisheries will be reopened.  Diane?

Ah, a day long dreamed of!
