That is the holiday — date still to be determined — Andy Copeland hopes for as his daughter Aimee fights off virulent flesh-eating bacteria that turned her life upside down in less than two weeks.

Her fight won’t be over on Aimee Day. She will likely need dialysis for some time to help her kidneys function, and rehab to adjust to life without her left leg, part of her abdomen and perhaps other body parts that surgeons may still remove because of her disease.

Still, on that day, the 24-year-old University of West Georgia graduate student should be able to breathe on her own, after medical staff remove a tube now stuck down her throat that is being used to regulate her oxygen level. And her parents and her sister should, again, hear her voice.

“We’re going to celebrate that day forever for the rest of your life,” Andy Copeland told his daughter as she lay heavily medicated in an Augusta, Georgia, hospital bed. “It’s the day that my daughter was delivered from this horrible, horrible disease.”

Speaking Sunday on CNN, Andy Copeland didn’t go into detail about the latest on his daughter’s condition as she fights for her life beyond saying, “We’re holding up very well here.”

Yet, as he’s done in regular Facebook posts chronicling the ordeal, Andy Copeland was positive about the future.

“I have every confidence that Aimee will be able to overcome this,” he said.

Just last month, she had a full and active life. Aimee was pursuing her master’s degree in psychology, with a focus on eco-psychology — the idea that harmonizing with nature can be a powerful tool in ensuring one’s psychological health and vitality.

On May 1, she and some friends were out near the Little Tallapoosa River, about 50 miles west of Atlanta, when she grabbed onto a homemade zip line, her family has said.

It snapped.

That led to a gash in her left calf, and ultimately it took 22 staples to close the wound, according to CNN affiliate WSB.

Athough she didn’t know it at the time, it was because of that cut that Aimee Copeland contracted the flesh-devouring bacteria, Aeromonas hydrophila.

Dr. Buddy Creech, an assistant professor of pediatric infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University, said that Aeromonas hydrophila — which is “remarkably common in the water and in the environment” — is one of many bacteria that can cause a flesh-eating process.

“When it gets into those deeper tissues, it has a remarkable ability to destroy the tissues that surround it in sort of this hunt for nutrition,” Creech said. “When it does that, those tissues die, and you see the inflammation and the swelling and the destruction that can be very difficult to control.”

Most humans are affected by these bacteria by swallowing them, resulting in diarrhea. Aimee Copeland’s case was much more uncommon, in that her wound got “infected and the infection (ran) wild,” explained Creech.

The pain continued for Aimee after her accident and, on May 4, a friend took her to an emergency room where she was diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis and flown to Augusta for surgery.

She went into cardiac arrest after being removed from the operating table, but was resuscitated, CNN affiliate WGCL reported.

It was then, Andy Copeland recalled on his Facebook page, that he was “told that Aimee might not survive the night.”

She did survive, though surgeries cost her the leg and part of her abdomen. A post Saturday on a blog set up by the University of West Georgia psychology department said more operations are coming: “Aimee will suffer the loss of her fingers, however physicians have hope of bringing life back to the palms of her hands, which could allow her the muscle control to use helpful prosthetics.”

At one point her lungs “required 100% pure oxygen to be fed to her through a respirator,” as the bacteria ravaged her body, her father wrote. By Sunday, she had improved significantly to 33% — just 12 percentage points shy of 21%, the level of oxygen in air around us.

If and when it gets to that point, she can be taken off the respirator. And her family can mark that moment, Aimee Day, on their collective calendar to celebrate this year and every year after.

For now, Andy Copeland is busy standing by, conversing with medical staff and expressing appreciation for his “amazingly resilient” daughter, as well as for the medical staff, friends and complete strangers who have shown their support.

And the entire family is staying hopeful, fueled in part by the remarkable progress they’ve seen so far.

“The words I hear from the medical professionals to describe Aimee’s continued recovery are ‘astonishing,’ ‘incredible,’ ‘confounding,’ ‘mind-boggling’ and ‘unbelievable,'” Andy Copeland wrote Saturday on Facebook.

“All those are fitting words. My favorite word is ‘miracle.'”

Many years ago, I had some money stolen while I was staying at a hotel in Monbetsu. I was on a business trip then.

The hotel had no bathtubs in the rooms so visitors had to get themselves washed in the big common bathroom.

Well I went there, took off my clothes and put them in the wooden cabinet along with my room key.

Then I went into the bathroom to get cleaned up. When I finished and stepped back to the changing room, I noticed my room key was gone!

I soon dashed to my room but found my money – a total of 50 thousand yen – had been stolen.

Although the thief must be not far away, I gave up chasing him as I was almost naked.

A Polish woman is facing three years in prison after she removed all of her ex-boyfriend’s teeth during dental surgery just days after their breakup.

“I tried to be professional and detach myself from my emotions,” Anna Mackowiak, 34, told the Austrian Times. “But when I saw him lying there I just thought, ‘What a bastard’ and decided to take all his teeth out.”

Marek Olszewski, 45, reportedly showed up at Mackowiak’s dental office complaining of toothache just days after he broke up with her. She then allegedly gave him a “heavy dose” of anesthetic, locked the door and began removing all of his teeth one at a time.

“I knew something was wrong because when I woke up I couldn’t feel any teeth and my jaw was strapped up with bandages,” Olszewski said.

“She told me my mouth was numb and I wouldn’t be able to feel anything for a while and that the bandage was there to protect the gums, but that I would need to see a specialist,” he said.

“I didn’t have any reason to doubt her, I mean I thought she was a professional.”

Adding to his trauma, Olszewski said his new girlfriend has already left him over his now toothless appearance.

“And I’m going to have to pay a fortune on getting indents or something,” he said.

Mackowiak is currently being investigated for medical malpractice.

My hobby is fishing. I drive down to the sea early in the morning every Sunday.

Although I enjoy fishing a lot, the thing that does weigh on my mind is the increasing signs of global warming.

Surprisingly enough, the type of fish that I catch these days are not what they used to be a few years ago.

The majority of them are supposed to be found in the southern parts of Japan.

This is a clear indication that sea temperatures are rising and that ocean currents are rapidly changing.

Aside from naming some of the company’s high-profile backers, the press release disclosed tantalizingly few details, saying only that the company will combine the sectors of “space exploration and natural resources” in a venture that could add “trillions of dollars to the global GDP.”

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Planetary Resources will explore the feasibility of mining natural resources from asteroids, a decades-old concept.

A young couple’s wedding plans suffered a setback when the groom-to-be found he had accidentally donated his girlfriend’s engagement ring to Goodwill. Josh Miller, 31, had been hiding the ring in the pocket of an old winter coat for two months as he waited for the right moment to pop the question.

She talked about the exact right (ring) that she wanted for a long time and we just finally found the perfect engagement ring and we were very excited,” Miller told ABC News’ Atlanta affiliate WSB-TV.

That excitement was short-lived however. Ready to propose, Miller dug through his closet for the ring, growing increasingly frantic as he realized it was nowhere to be found.

“I was just shaking,” Miller said. “I didn’t know what to do, or what to say, or how to feel. I called Cara immediately, but she thought I was joking.”

Thinking back, Miller realized that coat, ring and all, was among the items he had put in a pile to donate to Goodwill earlier in the week.

“Honestly, I just think I forgot,” he said. “I knew it was in my closet somewhere, but we were just grabbing stuff and I threw it in a pile and thought, ‘I don’t wear that anymore.’”

By the time Miller was able to get in contact with the Goodwill in his hometown of Buckhead, the coat, which had been put on the shelves earlier in the week couldn’t be located.

Miller has not given up however, he is hoping that a Good Samaritan finds the ring, in his jacket, which he described as a black ski jacket with gray stripes, and return it to him. The ring is made up of a square princess-cut solitaire with smaller diamonds surrounding it in a white gold setting.

“That ring means more to me than anything I can explain,” Miller told WSB.

In the meantime, the couple will proceed with their wedding plans; Miller is scheduled to fly to Akron, Ohio to ask his fiancee’ Cara Epstein’s father for her hand in marriage.

Whether or not there will be a ring to be put on that hand remains to be seen. “She’s a school teacher and I’m a landscaper,” he said. “We obviously don’t make enough money to afford something like that on a regular basis. It was a very large purchase for us, and I just made a very bad mistake.”

It is a compelling war-zone story of heroism of a U.S. soldier who gave his own life to save an Afghan girl from certain injury. Sgt. Dennis Weichel, 29, died in Afghanistan last week as he lifted an Afghan girl who was in the path of a large military vehicle barreling down a road. Weichel, a Rhode Island National Guardsman, was riding along in a convoy in Laghman Province in eastern Afghanistan when some children were spotted on the road ahead. The children were picking up shell casings lying on the road. The casings are recycled for money in Afghanistan.  Weichel and other soldiers in the convoy got out of their vehicles to get them out of the way of  the heavy trucks in the convoy.

The children were moved out of the way, but an Afghan girl darted back onto the road to pick up some more casings that lay underneath a passing MRAP, or Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle.  The huge armored trucks can weigh as much as 16 tons and are designed to protect the troops they carry from roadside bombs. Weichel spotted the girl and quickly moved toward her to get her out of the way.  He  succeeded, but not before he was run over by the heavily armored truck.

Staff Sgt. Ronald Corbett, who deployed with Weichel to Iraq in 2005, said, “He would have done it for anybody,” adding, “That was the way he was. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He was that type of guy.”

His remains  will arrive in Rhode Island Saturday, and a wake will be held in Providence Sunday. He’ll be buried Monday.    He is survived by his children, his fiancée and his parents.  Rhode Island Gov.
