今回2級を受験した生徒の話によると、ライティング問題は、

インターネットで友達を作ることの是非(金曜日受験組)

アパートでペットを飼うことの是非(日曜日受験組)

また準2級を金曜日に受験した生徒によると、学校で体育祭を開くことの是非が問われたそうです。

この3つのタイトルに基づいてこれからしばらく作文演習を行いたいと思います。

新年あけましておめでとうございます。

先日、小中学校の生徒たちとオンラインによる新年会を行いました。

Students and I threw an online New Year party the other day.

いろんなゲームを行いました。言葉当てゲーム、言葉合わせゲーム並べ替えゲーム。

We played many games such as word guessing game, word matching game, and word combining game.

お子さんたちは結構楽しそうにやってました。

All the children were having fun.

オンライン活動も結構楽しくやれるものだということを実感しました。準備さえ怠らなければ。

I realized through this experience that the online activities can be a lot of fun if prepared properly.

コロナ禍に見舞われ、人々は何をすべきか迷っていますが

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, people are in a maze and don’t know what to do.

.

2021年は何事もオンラインを中心としたものになってゆくのだろうと言う気がします。

But I get the feeling that the year 2021 will have to be online based.

講師たちはオンライン授業は対面と同じ位楽しいものにすることが求められます。

Teachers are required to make their online classes as fun as face-to-face classes

私も新しいアイデアを考え続けなければ。高齢だからなんて言うのは理由にならない。

I have to hit upon new ideas of how to run the class.

Getting older cannot be an excuse.

ほんの数年前に撮った写真が目に留まりました。ある教室で開かれた英会話勉強会の様子です。

普通こういった集まりは年齢や性別でかたよりがちですが、この日集まってくださった方がたは全然お構いなし。下は13歳から上は78歳まで幅広い年齢の方々でした。

共通点はただ1つ、英語が好き、英会話が好き。

うまいヘタなど関係なし。好きなテーマを好きなように話し合う。

ソーシャルディスタンスなど気にする必要がなかったあの頃・・・なんだか遠い昔に感じます。

何気なかった毎日が、とても貴重で眩しく見えますよね。

注　小さいお子さんたちの将来もありますので、私以外の顔は全て伏せさせていただきました。

「懐かしいね」。。。 is the phrase that I want to say when I am seeing this photo. Gone are the days that people have the freedom to roam around and gather as a group to form celebrations and get-togethers. This is the photo that I took with my students in the Eikaiwa Class that I am handling.
One can surmise the peace and freedom to flock together to create happy moments which we are now lacking and are forbidden to do during this time of the pandemic. Organizing parties or the like is the new taboo of the society. Being able to recollect as one regardless of race, gender, age, and interests is one of the priveleges that we have lost since the time of the coronavirus. I am still looking forward to the day that we can enjoy the time that we have as a human without boundaries, without masks, without health protocols, just as how we were almost 3 years ago.

西川聖人旭川市長が外出自粛を宣言したことを受け、当塾はグループレッスン全てをしばらくの期間辞めることを決めました。大人、子供、全てです。

Following the declaration of voluntary lockdown by the mayor of Asahikawa, Nishikawa Masato, I have decided to postpone and close all of my group lessons for both adults, as well as children.

しかし外出自粛と言う、個人個人の裁量に任せるやり方は不十分ではないかと思われます。

Based on what I can muster, simply suggesting a voluntary lockdown – a preventive measure that relies heavily on an individual’s will and decision – is not adequate to produce effective results in putting a halt into this pandemic.

コロナが始まってから9ヶ月が経ち、今第3波の波が押し寄せているのは誰の目にも明らか。

It is already known by everybody that we are now facing the third wave of the coronavirus and it has been nine (9) months now since the start of this outbreak.

菅総理大臣の国民任せ自粛対策やGOTO キャンペーンは、我が国の立て直しに繋がっていません。

By this, one can simply conclude that Prime Minister Suga’s decision to entrust the quarantine measures to the public is not helping the overall status of the country, not to mention the aftermath of the Go To Travel Campaign that was launched by the government.

この状況を打開するにはもっと厳しい方策を取らねばならないと思います

To resolve this, the government should begin implementing the “iron fist” if they are earnest in eliminating this almost year-long pandemic.

感染する人々は日に日に増加し我々が望む方向とは逆方向に進んでいます

The number of infected people is continuously increasing day by day and is leaning the opposite way, contrary to what we actually want to happen.

我々はちょっと楽観的に考えすぎてはいないでしょうか。個人裁量自粛ですべてのことが解決すると思いすぎてはいないでしょうか。今こそ国民が一つになって行動すべきであると思います。

People are simply being optimistic that the environment will involuntarily resolve it’s problem without much participation from the general public. I believe that we must act as one nation now.

フィリピンの友人であるジョンArvin Ramos さんが貴重な写真を送ってくれました。今年４月から８月まで行われた外出制限の様子です。

To emphasize on these, I have here the photos that one of my friends from the Philippines had sent me. These were the photos that were taken during the midst of the lockdown from April until late August.

市内中心部に出入りする人が尋問を受けているところです。

Exhibit A:

Local makeshift public transportations, such as this “pedicab” are being interviewed before entering the boundary of a new “barangay” (the smallest administrative region in a town) to ensure that all people who come in and out of the place are identified.

外出する人は、地方政府が発行したパスを求めに応じて停止しなければなりません。スーパーなどへの買い物も決められた時間内に済ませなければなりません。

Exhibit B: Local residents are required to show a Quarantine Pass to confirm their residency and locality to prevent them from going to other places without permission. This pass is also needed when doing grocery shopping for necessities. Shopping Schedules are also in place to prevent the supermarkets from overcrowding.

われわれが住む旭川もこのぐらいのことをしなければならないのではないでしょうか。

この厳しい外出規制のおかげでフィリピンのコロナ情勢はかなり快方に向かっています。

As you can see from these photos, that the Philippines is way too strict and advanced when in comes to the security and flow of crowd as compared to Asahikawa.

Based from the data and statistics online (statistics – https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/philippines/), you will see that the Philippines has already progressed a long way and is now on their way to putting an end into the coronavirus battle. Although the graph seems to be bumpy, at least, they are showing remarkable milestones in battling the pandemic as compared to Japan as a whole.

他国の良例を真似て取り入れることで、少しでも改善につながるならばやるべきではないでしょうか。

Sharing best practices and mimicking the good examples of other nations won’t do any harm, I guess, but in fact, it may even help us improve the situation where we are all in at the moment.

英語塾をはじめて10年。その間、塾生徒たちが英作文をやる際共通の文法ミスをすることに気づいた。

With my ten years of experience in teaching in an “eigo juku”, I noticed one common grammar mistake that students commit when creating their own essays and compositions.

それは、they’re, their, there がはっきり理解されていないことである。

That is the distinction among the usages of “their” (possessive), “there” (demonstrative pronoun), and “they’re” (contraction of ‘they are’).

これら同音異義語は発音が同じで意味が違う、だが勉強を重ねていくうちに混乱の渦に巻き込まれてしまうのだろう。

These homonyms are confusing to the ear and brain, as one would expect, but your mastery of the English Language may reflect within these confusions. Homonyms are words that are pronounced the same way but differ in meaning and origin.

最近、高校、大学生にディクテーション演習を課した。つまり、英文を聞かせて生徒たちに書かせてみた。Recently, I gave a practical dictation exercise. In this activity, I played audios for them to listen to and jot down whatever word they think they heard.

サンプル文の1つは、「Some people sell their goods online.」。

One of the sample sentences was, “Some people sell their goods online”.

ところが生徒たちの書いたのを見ると、９割以上がtheir を　thereにしてしまっている。結構できる子も同様のミス、なんてこった！

Alas! 90% of the students wrote down incorrectly, mistaking “their” for “there”.

And so did some good performers.

いやはや、どうやってこの誤りを生徒たちに気づかせるべきか、頭を悩ませています。They leave me wondering how I should approach the correction of this very common grammatical error.

だけどなんだなあ、３つのゼアの中で、この所有格のtheirが一番軽んじられてる気がする。3人兄弟の中で真ん中が冷遇されているのと同じ気分をこのtheirは感じているに違いない。かわいそうなtheirくん。泣

By the way, among these three homonyms, “the possessive – their” seems the most neglected , ignored, excluded, forgotten, and discriminated in the same manner as middle children.

POOR “THEIR”

久々に名寄市立大学の英語授業に行ってきました。4月から9月までの期間はすべてオンライン授業でしたが、

10月からは週ごとにオンラインと対面授業が代わる代わる行われています。

やっぱり対面の方が楽しいなぁ。活き活きした学生の表情を見ているとこちらまで若返った気分になります。

リーディングやリスニング等は高校で嫌というほどやらされてるので、大学ではあまりやらせないようにしています。

そのかわり全面的に力を入れているのがアウトプット、つまり自分の思っていることを書いたり話したりして発信する作業です。

名寄市立大学ではバーチャルエクスチェンジプログラムと言うシステムに参加しており、本学学生が世界中の学生たちと意見を交換できる場所が設けられています。

ゲーム、スポーツ、料理、ケーキ作り、観光地情報など話題は趣味、娯楽中心ですが、コロナ対策等の社会問題で熱く語り合う学生もたくさんいます。

ある学生がこのような投稿していました。Even if our government lifts up the GO TO TRAVEL campaign,  significant effects won’t be seen such as the rapid reduction in COVID-19 cases.

おおすごい、さすがは看護学科の学生。授業で教わったことを誰かに発信したくてウズウズしているのだろう、若いなぁ。とにかく名寄市立大の学生はコロナにもかかわらずみんな元気！

みんなの若さでウィルスなんか吹き飛ばしてしまおうぜ‼️

どういうわけか私の妻と子供は日曜日が私の料理日だと思っている。まるで当然のように今晩の夕飯は何と聞いてくる。

For some unknown reasons, my wife and children think that Sundays are my “Cooking Day”

They ask me what’s for dinner as if it were a matter of course.

私は冷蔵庫の中を見てどんな具材があるかを確かめます。

I looked in the fridge to see what ingredients I had on hand.

えーっと冷凍の豚肉スライスとキャベツが一個か。

Well, there is some frozen sliced pork loin and a head of cabbage.

よし味噌漬け焼きを作ってみよう。

OK Why don’t I try “Misozuke-Yaki” , pan roasted pork with miso marinade?

クックパッドのレシピを見ながら取り掛かる。失敗しないことだけを念頭に。

I soon searched the recipe on Cookpad and began working o it , hoping that it would not turn out terrible.

で、できた作品がこれです。So this is what I made.

そんなに悪くないでしょ?

妻も子供も喜んで食べてくれました。

東京の有名私立大学に進学したKさんから突然LINEが来た。経済関係の授業で提出する英語レポートの締め切りが迫っており翻訳に手間取っていると言う。時刻は午前2時、よほど切迫しているのだろう。

頼まれたら嫌とは言えない性格、手伝うことにした。「ところでレポート提出期限はいつなの」と聞くと「明日の朝です、いや違う、今日のあさ」

「今日？　あのなあ、もっと早く知らせろよ！」

思わず怒鳴りそうになるのを堪えた。「いかん怒ってる場合じゃない。早くさっさと終わらせなければ。」

「それで、英訳したい文章はどんな文章なの」と尋ねた。

では行きます。

① コロナの影響を受けている産業には政府が交付金を出すよう検討すべきだ。

② アジアの15カ国がRCEPに署名したがこれにインドも加わるべきである。

③日本ではコロナ禍で多くの企業が業績不振にあえいでいる。なのに株価が上昇しているのはおかしい。これは政府が年金のお金を株式に投入することを認めているからだ。株価は実際の経済の状態を表す指標でなくてはならない。両者に大きなギャップがあってはならない。

これら全く違う話を含むレポートとは一体どんなものなのか、

不思議に思いつつ翻訳を手伝った。

( 1 ) The government should consider providing subsidy to those industries affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

( 2 ) Fifteen Asian countries signed RCEP, or regional comprehensive economic partnership. India should join too.

(3) In Japan many companies are suffering from poor business performance owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the other hand stock prices are on the rise, which is very strange. It is because the government is allowing our pension fund to be invested in stock market. There should be no gap between the two.

大体このような文を書いてKさんに送ってあげた。大学に行っても僕を頼ってくるのは悪い気はしない。むしろ嬉しい。

でももう少し時間的余裕が欲しい。もっと早く教えてチョウダイ。

♪ ♪みんなまあるくタケモトピアノ♪ ♪

大学生のＳ君。スタイルが良くてさっぱりしていてまるで俳優のようだ。彼に限らず最近の男子大学生はみんなおしゃれな気がする。

そんな彼に好きな食べ物や飲み物の話を聞いたところ、スイーツとフルーツジュースと言う答えが返ってきた。

時代の違いを感じるなぁ。昔の大学生と言えばとにかく酒酒酒だった。

今はもう大酒のみがもてはやされる時代ではないと言う事か。

昭和は遠くなりにけり…

小学校の生徒　Nさんのレッスン日、袋にリンゴを入れてやってきた。

今回英検４級に合格したご褒美に果樹園へ連れてってもらい、生まれて初めてリンゴ狩りをしたのだそう。

「私ね、たくさん採ったんだよ。３種類あったから野村せんせいに一個ずつあげるね」

なんとも嬉しい。

なるほど、確かに形状や色がそれぞれ違う。

「どうもありがとう、食べさせてもらうからね」

「あのね、果樹園の人が言ってたけど、とれたてが一番美味しいんだって。だから３個とも今日食べて」

「それはちょっと・・・と言いかけたが、せっかくの好意を台無しにしたくなかったのでウンウンと返した。

コロナで殺伐とした日々が続く中、ほんのりと心が温まった瞬間でした。
