NHK副音声は聴き取りにくいので、ABCニュースから題材を選びました。

Air travelers now have a new fee to contend with. Spirit Airlines has announced it’s going to start charging for carry-on luggage. 

空の旅行客は、新たな航空運賃と闘うこととなった。スピリット航空が、機内持ち込み手荷物に料金を課すると発表したのである。

It’s a rule we’ve all come to know. What’s beyond this?

これは我々皆すでに知っている規則だが、その先には何が待っているのでしょうか？

We try to bend before boarding a flight. 　このbendの解釈をめぐり、２通りの意見が出ました。①私たちは、搭乗前に（荷物を一つにまとめるため）身体を曲げる。　②私たちは、搭乗前に（なんとか規則に合わせようと）努力する。　→　どっちでしょうね、montoさん？

Only one carry-on and one personal item allowed.　現行では手荷物一個と物品一個の持ち込みが許されている。For most travelers, that doesn’t even include jacket, food, magazine, you know.だがほとんどの場合、上着、食料、雑誌はその物品に数えないとしている。

But for one airline,  that rule will now cost you.　And these days, the cabins crowded with carry-ons one airline is fighting back. だがこの制度に課金しようとする会社が１社ある。　キャビンが手荷物でいっぱいになるのを食いとめようとしている会社が１社ある。

Spirit  airlines announce that beginning in August, they will not only charge you for checked bags, but the carry ons too.スピリット航空社は、この８月より、預け荷物だけでなく持ち込み荷物にも料金を課すと発表。

“I think it’s a lot of, much, pressure with the economy. こりゃ家計にひびくわ。　→インタビューに応じた旅行客の嘆き。

They claim that they are lowering checked bag fees and ticket fares.同社では、預け荷物と航空運賃を下げると主張。

But prepare to pay 20 to 30 dollars for your carry-on at the ticket counter, 45 dollars at the boarding gate.  ただし持ち込み荷物には料金支払いを覚悟してください。　チケットカウンターでなら２０－３０ドル。　搭乗ゲートなら４５ドル。　→　なぜこんな差をつけるのかな？

Our sales, since we made this announcement,  have been up over 50% versus the same time last week.　（同社社長のコメント）この発表後でも、売上高は先週に比べ５割アップした。

Part of Spirit’s popularity lies in the fact that it builds itself as the leading ultralow cost carrier in the United States.　スピリット航空の人気は、超格安運賃の先端をゆくキャリアとしてのし上がってきた事実に一部あります。

We did some number crunching of our own. 自分たちでちょっと計算してみました。　ナンバークランチング、面白い表現ですね。

The price of a one-way flight on Spirit  from Atlanta to Myrtle beach can run as low as 31 dollars a ticket. アトランタからマートルビーチまでの片道運賃を例にとると、ひとりあたり３１ドル下がる計算になりますが、

But adding all the additional charges and all of cart fees, the total can quickly add up to 165 bucks. すべての付加チャージを加算すると現行より１６５ドル高くつくことになります。

That’s about the same price as the ticket on a premium airline but almost twice the super saver fare we found on Delta. これなら主要航空会社と変わらなくなり、デルタ航空で見つけたスーパーセーバー料金の２倍となります。

 But Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza stands by his decision.  “It will make fares generally cheaper  for consumers  And we’ll make the boarding process smoother and easier for everyone.

同社CEOは、自分が下した決定を支持しています。　この制度で、より安い運賃が実現し、搭乗手続きがスムーズに楽になるだろう。

So the question remains. Will paying for carry-ons become the norm for all the airlines?疑問が一点。　この動き、他社もあたりまえに追随するのでは？

Quite certain. Other airlines are watching us very very closely to see it’s success or it’s failure.　（同社広報のコメント：　ありえますね。うまくいくか、失敗するか他社はじっくりと模様を眺めています。）

Now the fees are going to affect for flights booked after August 1st. ８月１日以降に予約するものすべてにこの料金が適用されます。

My goodness. What will they think of next?

関西の旧友より苦情のTELがありました。

「なんやあの音声ファイル。雑音だらけで聴こえへんやないか。ようdictationできるなあ」

という内容でした。　

説明申し上げます。

恥ずかしい話、PCからとった音声を編集するのに８０年代ラジカセを使っておるのです。

取っ手は折れ、ボタンはひとつ紛失、スピーカーはへこんでいるシロモノ。　これを編集に用いているので雑音が混じるのです。　dictationはPCのキレイな音を直接聞いているので楽にできるのですが。

世の中広しといえど、ラジカセを使って音声を編集しているのは私ぐらいかもしれませんね。

「そんな粗大ゴミ、早く捨てればあ」妻と子がいいます。　でも何十年もの間、故障もせずに英語勉強を支えてくれた仲間。　そうやすやすと捨てらりゃしません。

　「古い奴だとお思いでしょうが」って歌もあったでしょう？　（今うなづいた人、５０歳以上ですネ）

そんなわけで、塾が軌道に乗って設備投資できるようになるまでガマン願います。

We got a lot of reaction when we talked about this yesterday. Is this the face of Jesus? 

Last night on this channel, we had a new 3D image based on studies of shroud of turin,  cloth that some say was wrapped around Jesus’ face when he died.  But since the shroud itself was wrapped in controversy either, it’s been debated about so much. 

この３D画像は、Shroud　of Turinoと呼ばれる布（キリストの遺体を包んでいたとされるが、異論も多い）に映っている顔をベースに再現された。　だが、その布自体、信憑性を巡って議論に包まれている。（うまいこといいますね）　

Dan Harris took the image to the public to find out seeing is believing. Watch this.

Some people just don’t buy it.

It’s unclear if the shroud is real.　I believe that’s  an accurate picture of whoever　the shroud belongs to.　But it’s an unclear if that  shroud belongs to Jesus Christ.

 （布自体がキリストのものと言えないのだから、３D画像だって本物とは言い難い。⇒もっともな意見ですね。）

However you look at it, the drive to create this image and the intense response to it is another illustration of the profound role that Jesus continues to play in so many lives.

 この画像をどう見ようとも、復元努力やそれに対する強い反響は、多くの人々の心の中でキリストが依然として深い役割を果たしていることの現れです。

Doesn’t matter how he looks. It’s what he did that counts.

奇跡中の奇跡と呼べる事件がアメリカでおこりました。　夜中に脳卒中で倒れた女性が、助けを求めてかけた電話。　意識がもうろうとしていたため、友人にかけるつもりが数百キロはなれた女子大生につながってしまいます。　真夜中に鳴った携帯、そして見知らぬ番号。この女子大生はいたずら電話かと思い、出るかどうか迷います。　ここでもし女子大生が無視を決め込めば、脳卒中の女性は命を失うところでした。　結果的にこの女子大生は電話を取り、救急車を呼んで命を救うこととなるのですが、その背景には二重の奇跡が起こっていたのでした。　今日のサロンではこの話題でレッスンを行い、「夜中にかかってきた不審電話に出るべきか」を中心に話し合いました。　参考までにTVニュースの音声と聴きとった文章を表記します。

Here’s an amazing story. A woman suffered from stroke, then she made a desperate call for help to her friend, but she accidentally dialed a wrong number. But the stranger on the other end of the call ended up saving her life. She called 911.

Tell us about this.  Is this a change of definition of when a stranger called, DON’T HANG UP?  

You became a hero when a stranger called. What happened? 

 

*****Early  Saturday morning. I get a phone call on my cell phone and at first I thought that was a prank call. However, Mrs.Turner, she was in need of help, and when she said she needed help, I realized XXXXX   Quickly I spoke to a friend and she used her cell phone and called 911 police department. And they transferred me to Richmond  Police Department. I told them all the information I could get out of her, her name,  her city that she lived in, what had happened, and things that she had told  me, They quickly got the perimeter closer to her  house and helped her.

 

 

Taylor you saved her life, because the authority had actually had to break into her house to get her because she had in fact suffered from stroke and could not move. And I understand the　reason you decided to pick up the phone call normally that you wouldn’t especially in the middle of the night, was because you noticed the area code and you thought that was near where you grew up? 

 

Yes. The area code was actually my area code that I was　actually  in so the first thing I thought was that it was a friend or   someone called me from a different cell phone so I thought I had to pick up the phone for him.

 つまり、運命を分けたのはおばあさんの市外局番でした。　女子大生が幼少のころ住んでいた地域の市外局番と同じだったため、「昔の友達かもしれない」と考えて通話ボタンを押したのでした。　

私が彼女の立場なら、電話を取らず、おばあさんを死なせることになった気がします。　皆さんはどうでしょうか？

広告の甲斐あって3人の女性が新たに仲間入り。　熱心な人ばかりです。　こちらも奮起しなくては!!!

本日の勉強メニュー

リーディング（読解）の部では、食べ残しの無駄を無くすために日本国内でドギ－バッグの普及展開をはかるＮＰＯ団体についてのJAPAN　TIMES記事を取り上げました。　我が国だけで無駄に捨てられる食物は、世界中の援助用食糧とほぼ同じ量である、という内容には一同「うーん」と考えさせられた様子でした。原文は以下の通り。　

Can doggy bags save the world?

In Japan every year, leftovers are roughly the same as the world’s annual total of food aid. And then there’s the waste-disposal crisis . . .

It can be a bit embarrassing at a restaurant to say that you’d like to take your leftovers away with you. That’s probably why people the world over often ask for the food to be put in a “doggy bag,” whether or not they have a hungry pooch waiting at home. The cute expression also helps them to avoid looking mean.

Eco packs: Asako Hirai of the Doggy Bag Committee displays various reusable doggy bags made of plastic that even allow diners to take liquid leftovers home.

Remarkably, though, the Japanese language never came up with an equivalent to describe a container for leftover food — and without there being a word for something, how can it exist?

That’s why Tokyo-based nonprofit organization Doggy Bag Committee (DBC) has set out to popularize the English term. By encouraging diners in Japan to take their leftovers home, DBC plans to try and reduce the nation’s annual 5-to-9 million-ton mountain of food left on people’s plates or discarded by shops after its sell-by date.

It doesn’t matter much to me. My husband has already retired. My kid lives in Sapporo.

(私の場合亭主は引退しているし、子供は札幌在住なので、影響ありません）

I  DO mind it.  I’ve got two kids. One lives  in Tokyo, and another one in Sendai.  I suspect we’ll end up facing some inconvenience  setting up a family get-together.

(困りますね。私には子供が二人いて、一人は東京、もう一人は仙台にすんでいます。　家族全員で集まるのに不都合が生じるだけなんじゃないかという気がします）

It may be worth a try although the proposal enriches the tourism industry only.   After all we are in an deep and long recession. Something must be done to stimulate the ailing economy. 観光業界を潤すだけだろうけれど、やってみる価値はあるのではないだろうか？つまるところ日本は深くて長い不況にあり、経済を刺激するために何かしなくては。

両者は「原爆投下は必要だったか？」を論議しています。
限られた時間内で討論するのですから、相手のこまごました論点にすべて触れるよりも、キーポイントだけに絞って論じる方が効果的だったのではないでしょうか？
また、日本軍の戦意の有無と、戦争終結に対する取り組みを表裏一体と見なすのは妥当でない気がします。

細かいことはさておき、根幹となる部分だけ着目しましょう。

古森氏の考え：「戦意をなくした日本に原爆は不要だった」
米人B：「日本に戦意はまだ残っていた。従って投下はやむを得なかった」
米人A：（このテープに録音された部分に限って言えば、自分の意見を言っていない。）戦後日本の反省度の低さにホコ先を向けて糾弾することにより、「そんな日本に非難されるいわれはない」という意見に終始している。（ソ連に対する優位性のくだりは、他人の意見の引用であって、Aさん自身のものではありません）

こう見ていくと、Aさんはもっと自分の意見を言うべきですよね、戦意にせよ対ソ優位性にせよ。　「はぐらかし」だけではdebateとは呼べないですよ。　ホント

これだけの量のディクテーションとその訳を、よくやり抜きましたね。恐れ入ります。

このディスカッションの論理が私には噛み合っていない気がするのですが、私の理解力がないからなのでしょうか？それとも、実際、噛み合っていないのでしょうか？

米A：　原爆投下前に勝敗は決まっており、投下した本当の理由はソビエトに対し政治的優位性を見せておきたかったから。

古森：ソ連が中国日本領に進出してきた8月9日には2回目の原爆が落とされた。これは、日本の敗戦を意味する。

この時点で、議論はかみ合っていない気がする。その後も数回、噛み合わない論議が続くような…頭が混乱してきました。

なんにせよ、この仕事の見事さは賞賛に値します。

I’d also  add that US could have just demonstrated the awesome power of the newly developed weapon, test explosion or something.
付け加えますが、（もし米国の目的がソ連を敬遠することにあったのなら）この恐ろしい新型爆弾を（居住地に落とさず）どこかで爆破実験してその模様を世界中に知らしめるだけで充分だったのではないでしょうか？

It’s an assertion that Japanese have not come to grasp with the sense of our guilt. I really take issues with that. because I don’t remember how many times Japanese prime ministers and other political leaders really showed the act of apology. In addition to this, a tremendous amount of reparation was paid to all those countries.　In addition, the Tokyo War Crime Trials, I don’t know two thousand people were executed, and all that.  In addition to this, bombing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  So the issue of Japanese textbooks – it’s really taken out of context – made sort of a political issue by Korean and Chinese.
日本が罪の意識を持っていなかったとはずいぶんなご意見ですね。　それについては言わせてもらいますよ。　というのも今まで日本の総理大臣や政界首脳が何度謝罪の行動をとってきたか、その数ははかり知れません。　それに当事国に対しては多額の賠償金を支払っています。　また東京軍事裁判では、２千人もの戦犯が処刑されている。　（広島、長崎で受けた大きな被害を勘定に入れず）これだけのことをやらされてきたのです。
また教科書に関する意見は、韓国や中国によって政治問題化されてきた論調ですが、主旨が理解されていないです。
